As September baseball is approaching rapidly, all eyes are on New York baseball and for once, the Bronx is not the cause of excitement. Citi Field, home of the New York Mets has seen some of the best pitching Major League Baseball has to offer this season. All-Stars Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, and Noah Syndergaard have become a lethal force, slowly killing batting averages and keeping runners stranded. The Mets awaited the return of the franchise, David Wright, who made his return to Philadelphia on Monday.
Wright has been playing ball with the Mets' Class A team, St. Lucie. During his time spent with St. Lucie, Wright's batting average was .300. Wright began his assignment as the designated hitter and slowly moved his way back to his original position as third baseman.
Wright has been battling spinal stenosis, but it has not affected his play for St. Lucie. The Mets are leading the National League East over the Washington Nationals by five games. The Mets hope to continue playing well and are hoping that their pitching staff continue playing as tremendously as they have been throughout the season.
In addition to watching Wright at the plate, the Mets are hoping for continuing hits from outfielder Curtis Granderson and first baseman Lucas Duda. Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes stole the show in the Friday night matchup against the Colorado Rockies with five runs, five hits, seven RBIs, and three home runs.
The Mets must extend their lead in order to continue to dominate the National League East. Although the Mets have a comfortable five game lead over the second place Washington Nationals, the Mets must continue to bring in runners to the plate, a problem the team faced earlier in the season. All eyes will be on Captain David Wright as he takes the plate for the first time at Citi Field in months. Both fans and critics question if Wright's return is too sudden. The team will discover if David is the right man to lead the Mets to capture the National League East title.
