The heavily anticipated Olympics have started in Rio! All eyes, and most TVs, will be tuned in to see which country gains dominance and which athletes proves superior. This year, Team USA has the largest team since 2004. There are some pretty impressive guys on the team: from Michael Phelps to Kevin Durant. But I think it's the women that call special attention this year. Since when was women's gymnastics one of the most highly anticipated sports? I always ignored it, choosing to watch the running or basketball games. So I've compiled a list of the top women athletes from Team USA that you should be watching for:
1. Simone Biles (Gymnastics)
This chick and I are the same age (19), and she has more medals for one sport than I've probably ever earned in my life. And her sass during her performance is out the door. I'm not much of a gymnastics person, but I definitely want to see Simone Biles rock the socks off of Rio.
2. Katie Ledecky (Swimming)
Again, this chick and I are the same age. Yet she holds not one, not two, but three world records (400-, 800-, and 1500- meter freestyle). She's also nine time world champion... NBD.
3. Clarissa Shields (Boxing)
Shields won gold for boxing in 2012- making her the only U.S. boxer coming to Rio as a defending Olympic champ. Oh, and casually the first U.S. woman to win gold in boxing. She's also the current middleweight champ... Suddenly, I don't feel like my 20s will be marked by such great achievement in comparison.
4. Elena Delle Donne (Basketball)
Elena Delle Donna is hands down my favorite WNBA player. She's the 2015 MVP for the league (with 38 of 39 first-place votes) and played in the 2014 and 2016 all-star games. She also has Lyme disease, which doesn't appear to be slowing her down any.
5. Aly Raisman (Gymnastics)
So Aly gets a gif because you really have to see her 2012 gold medal performance to believe it (ok, so maybe watch it two or three times). This makes me dizzy just watching it. After taking a two-year hiatus and pushing the normal age limit of gymnasts (22...), Raisman is back and ready to make another run towards gold.
6. The Rowing Team (as a whole)
The women's eight-boat hasn't lost a major race in 10 years. That's pretty impressive. Their two time consecutive Olympic gold medal winners, looking to add a third to their collection.
7. Serena Williams (Tennis)
There are four things I just want to appreciate about Serena: 1. She's a total boss. 2. The number of times she has done a split on the court and still gotten the point. 3. When asked by reporters why she wasn't smiling at a press conference, she flat out said she'd rather be in bed than answer the same questions over and over. 4. She was in Beyonce's "Lemonade" movie... I will flip a gasket if she doesn't win gold. #boybye
8. Kerri Walsh Jennings (Beach Volleyball)
Walsh is three time Olympic gold champion, winning in 2004, 2008, and 2012. This year, she's going for her fourth with a new partner, April Ross. She also currently holds the record for most titles won (113).
9. Ibtihaj Muhammad (Fencing)
Muhammad is most known for being the first U.S. woman to compete in the Olympics while wearing a hijab. She's been a member of the national fencing team since 2010 and is currently ranked second in the nation. She's a five-time Senior World medalist. Oh and she casually double majored in International Relations and African studies at Duke. Sharp in mind and sword.
10. The Soccer Team (As a whole)
Ok, let's be totally honest for a second: the U.S. Women's Soccer Team is 110 percent better than the Men's. Like let's just be real. They've been undefeated in the Olympics since 2004. They won the 2015 World Cup. Their record is mega-impressive. And the obvious favorite for the gold medal this year is....
11. Brittney Griner (Basketball)
Griner is a beast of a baller... 'nough said. Seriously though, this girl had 52 dunks in 32 games while still a high schooler. May 7, 2009 was declared Brittney Griner Day by the mayor of Houston. I kid you not. With Delle Donne and Griner playing for Team USA, I feel confident in bringing home the gold.
12. Allyson Felix (Track)
Google Felix race results and you will see a lot of first place wins on her track record (pun intended). She won three gold medals in London and is thirsty for more.
The U.S. Women's Olympic team is chock full of amazing athletes. Like, where did these girls come from? In London 2012, the women's team collected more medals than the men's team and these girls have not stopped working since. If you aren't now thoroughly pumped up to watch the women compete, then watch the Rio Olympics "Salute" video and/or Katy Perry's Rise video. Now you're ready for the Olympics.
