The Who's Who of Alternative Literature

Up and coming authors of the internet age literary revolution.

The Who's Who of Alternative Literature

When I began submitting my poems and flash fiction pieces for publication, I knew little to nothing about the "alternative literature" world. I knew of former literary movements, like Realism, Modernism, Romanticism, and Transcendentalism, but what about the current revolution going on now?

Although there isn't a lot of talk about underground writers, something really amazing is happening. A new wave of poets is taking over, and I'm lucky enough to be one of them. Although it is currently a small community, there are a lot of up and coming writers whose work is changing the world as we know it by their large influences of social media and weird, avant-garde humor.

A favorite writer of mine in the alt-lit community, and perhaps one of the most famous, is Mira Gonzalez. Her first collection of poems (or a chapbook, for short) is entitled Iwill never be beautiful enough for us to be beautiful together, and can be purchased here: https://www.amazon.com/will-never-beautiful-enough-together/dp/0988839407.

It details the millennial struggles of relationships, online followings and incredibly dark humor. Her collection updates poetry and brings it into the age of the internet, and she does it well. Her Twitter, @miragonz, is even poetic in itself; her tweets include a lot of yeast infections, weed and hilarious social observations.

There are a lot of other authors worth taking a look at, and here are some of them:

Tao Lin (@tao_lin): Shoplifting from American Apparel (2009) https://www.amazon.com/Shoplifting-American-Appare...

Melissa Broder (@sosadtoday/@melissabroder): So Sad Today: Personal Essays (2016) https://www.amazon.com/So-Sad-Today-Personal-Essay...

Kate Monica (@kate_monica_): Nervous Universe (2015) http://www.electriccereal.com/bookstore/nervous-un...

Katie Foster (@__kfoster): Animal Problems (2015) http://www.electriccereal.com/bookstore/animal-pro...

Erin Taylor (@erinisaway/@erinpoehler): OOOO (2015) http://bottlecap-press.myshopify.com/products/oooo

Joseph Parker Okay (@verysoftlake): My phone is about to die and i hope it takes me with it (2016) http://2fast2house.com/store/my-phone

Shy Watson (@sadsects): Away Status (2016) http://bottlecap-press.myshopify.com/products/away...

Sara Sutterlin (@pissbb): Baveuse (2015) http://www.electriccereal.com/bookstore/baveuse-by...

My own chapbook, Depression is a thunderstorm and I am a scared dog, will be coming out on http://maudlinhouse.net the summer of 2017!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
