Earlier this week, the Weeknd released a brand new single off of his upcoming album, 'STARBOY'. Not only does he have a new album, but he also has a new hairstyle.
What surprised me and the majority of his fans was his new persona. No longer is Abel all about that 'low life'. Now it's all about his all red Lamb' and doing drugs off of Ebony tables, no longer glass tables like they were years ago.
I can't speak for any other fan except myself and the truth is I am a bit upset. Don't get me wrong, I am beyond happy for Abel, but there is a part of him that is no longer there. The part that is missing is what I truly believe to be the part of him that made thousands of fans fall in love with him and his music.
Before this new album, his songs were much more relatable. They were about broken hearts, lost loves, being alone in the world and the overall struggle of making it from day to day. Personally, I can't relate to giving a girl diamonds just to keep her interested in me, or driving around in my Lamborgini that I DIDN'T lease. I don't know anyone that could. I could, however, relate to feeling lonely and wanting to do anything in order to not feel my emotions even just for a night.
Let's talk about the music video for Starboy.
If you haven't seen it, you should go do that right now, before I spoil it for you. Don't worry, I'll be right here once you're done.
Watched it? Good, let's begin.
The video starts off with Abel killing the pineapple-haired Weeknd we have come to know and love. For those new to the fandom, he's been doing this in every music video that is the single for a new album. It symbolizes him leaving behind the old album him, and creating a new image for this new "era". As far as hairstyles go, he had a similar hairstyle in the 'Kiss Land' era.
Then he reveals himself and his new hairstyle while talking and dancing like the king of pop, Micheal Jackson, an idol to the Weeknd. Abel then proceeds to take down a cross and smash all the awards and albums he has. I am not going to go into the symbolism and possible Illuminati messaging but I am that it is somewhere out there in the world if you're curious about that.
I will admit, it is a very catchy song. Catchy enough to make you want to dance even with a huge cross in your hand and glass all over the floor.
The ending of the video was a little weird, though. His passenger, a black cat, suddenly became a huge panther. Personally, I'd be terrified, but he played it off as if it was nothing.
Let's not even talk about 'False Alarm'...
At the end of the day, I am extremely excited for what this new album has to bring. If it's anything like 'Starboy', then fans (including me) will be happy. Until Nov 25, my fellow XO crew.
