The Water In The Watch

If we're going to have any water in our watch, we may as well fill it up and still be able to see the time.

The Water In The Watch
Sarah Lucchesi

I am a forgetful person. It's quite an irritating trait to have. It constantly causes losses, provoking the awful feeling of "oh no" in the realization I've left something behind. Or in cases like today, when I look down at my brand new watch as I step out of the shower, to notice in its soggy fogginess that the non-waterproofed watch had been forgotten about. Lovely. I considered taking it off to dry, but then I figure it's as useful wet as it was dry, and surely just as stylish. The fog and droplets, in fact, actually increased my appeal to the watch. I took a moment to admire it and indulge in a habit of mine; overthinking.

With little water in the watch, there is more fog, making it harder to see the intentions of the ticker. I see there is no way for me to empty out the water completely, so I wonder if perhaps even adding more water will make it easier to reveal the time. I stare intently into the still-ticking accessory and consider it a metaphor. The watch is, of course, my time in life, the water being the everyday trials and tribulations I endure and adore, including the people I do so with. If I fill my time with little activity, there is less clarity on what I do with my time, the fog. No, wait, I think, maybe the fog could represent the confusion that stems from having a lack of priorities in life. So the water droplets are placeholders of my time and unless I completely immerse myself into the activities I'm involved in and soak the whole watch in water, there will be fog in my watch and confusion in my head. You can be filling your time with all the droplets around, but if your heart and mind aren't immersed in what you fill your time with, it won't be clear to you what you consider "worth your time." You have to embrace the unsavory. If you don't like your new job, you should still get good at it, see what you like about it and let your mind be full of it to reveal the impact it has on your time in life. If you find a new hobby, but the mediocrity with which you perform it bothers you, I believe you should still preserve, find out what could make you better or what you may like instead.

If we're going to have any water in our watch, we may as well fill it up and still be able to see the time. And if we're going to do anything in life, we may as well do it fully and see what remains important to us.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
