Oh The Walking Dead, you confusing, frustrating, and yet, sometimes compelling, beast. AMC's zombie program has been a massive hit since its debut, beginning a saga that only had a six-episode first season. Despite some really hardcore, solid moments, The Walking Dead hasn't been able to really grip me the way that the first season did, and I purely blame it on the fact that 6 episodes for one arc is a lot easier to take in than a 16 episode season. Too much filler, too much bad writing, and too much dull shit can really bring a show down.
Despite the fact that AMC is still pulling in a ton of viewers for each adventure featuring Rick and his gang, at the season premiere of Season 7, when the dust had settled, I firmly planted my foot down, and said "That's it." I had been a semi-devoted follower of the show since day 1, sort of planning to let it go during Season 4. However, friends stated with much flair that my significant other and I needed to get back into watching it, so we did. Even though there were shocking moments, those elements were surrounded by pure idiotic character choices and a ton of just boring story lines.
The only real strong thing to come out of that season was Carol, who was quickly becoming my favorite character up until last season. She gave zero -curse words-, she seemed like she was a bonafide leader, one who could easily take Rick's torch, and she came out of an abusive relationship and showed she wasn't messing around anymore. That's a good character arc!! BUT GUESS WHAT? Last season she pulled a total 180 and began to question things. Morgan's nonviolent nature must have got to her head.
Still, I pressed on. Season 5 and 6 had the same problems has previous seasons sans the first provide a threat to the gang, they need to figure it out, zombie attack, major action sequence, cycle rinse repeat, Maybe not necessarily in that order, but still, a formula. Daryl and Glenn, who were once favorite characters, immediately started doing stuff that I didn't care about, so long gone was the "If Daryl dies, we riot" thought process from my head.
I began to not care who died on this show. Not even joking. Everyone showcased some sort of poor idea or acted in a way that just rubbed me the wrong way. Glenn's being brought down above the dumpster surrounded by zombies was a moment that could've had a serious impact on the show, as I thought AMC would've had grown a pair and killed him off then. However, when he survived, (after we had to wait three episodes to find that out, a constant ploy of the program), I wondered if writers would even have the thought to (SPOILERS) end the life of Maggie's husband. Well, they did, in an ode to the comics, an act of gory brutality that did not affect me whatsoever.
Glenn was my favorite at one point, and now he's dead. And I didn't give two shits. So if I didn't care about that, and I don't care about anything going on, it was a sign that this show just is not good. I cannot bring myself to waste time regarding characters that are poorly written and ending up dying deaths that are not effective as a whole. They have no meaning.
And neither does Walking Dead. I'm done.
