The Virginity Myth

Why women shouldn't judged based on their sexual decisions.

"By Social Construction we mean the way people assign meaning to the world. Through language we learn how to categorize the world and children learn how to speak this language and they learn how to assign meaning to that word." (Social Problems, Joel Best 2nd Ed, Page 11)

In today's world there is a lot of talk about women and virginity. When it is best to lose your virginity, what happens after you lose your virginity and how certain women are looked at if they still are virgins by the age of 25.

I'm here to tell you that all this talk of virginity is completely false. Virginity is something made up by society to explain to many what seems like a natural process. Which is why some women are called prudes because they won't do it, haven't done it yet or did it. It is a natural process, but not in the way we think it is.

Many times people say that you lose your virginity when a foreign object penetrates you and breaks what many people say (I'm going to say it nicely for vulgarity sake) your cherry. What many do not know is that this is a natural process that is supposed to happen hopefully by the time of a woman's first menses.

Your "cherry" is supposed to separate from the rest of your body by a natural process. This could happen in a variety of ways but not limited to, riding a bike, running, sitting down or just standing up. Very rarely does it happen because something is shoved up there.

Most girls experience this separation process in their life. This stigma about it being lost because of objects breaking it is because there is such a small amount of women who it actually happens this way. These women lose their virginity in the way society has taught us to believe. Their tissues for some reason never separated and are forcefully separated by something purposely breaking them.

In other cases, some women do not even lose their virginity naturally and their tissues can't even be broken naturally. They undergo a surgery often called an hymenectomy where their cherry is put under the knife and split open. In these cases the virginity is lost in a doctor's office.

I'm not saying here that having intercourse for the first time isn't as special as people believe it to be. It is still just as special because it shows some sort of emotional connection to someone. You can make it anything you want it to be even if it may just be from a night of getting drunk.

This is an important topic to discuss in today's world because women are often treated badly if they refrain from sex before they are married, if they are still virgins by a certain age or are called names because they lost it by a certain age. It should be nice to know that most women aren't actually virgins for very long and should not be treated by their sexual decisions.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
