Over the years the Victoria Secret Fashion Show has changed in many ways. As the years pass by, and technology evolves, the show becomes about how many viewers it can bring in. I mean, yes, it was always about the ratings, but now more then ever, networks worry about numbers. The VS Fashion Show is no longer about just any model, but about models with famous last names with huge followings, who have had help getting their foot in the door. I don’t mean to discredit them, but it is a lot easier for them to be invited than for girls who nobody knows, and may be much better models.
Models like Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid, are specific examples. We can’t deny that all three of these girls are absolutely stunning, but we also can’t deny that they are invited specifically because they come from famous families and bring in viewers. I remember watching the VS Fashion Show for the first time in 2008, and thinking Adriana Lima was the most beautiful model on earth. She also opened the show that year, and after that I made it my job to watch. She brought hope to many young girls who also came from foreign countries looking to model, and she also represented a sence of classiness whenever she was interviewed or spoke.
Luckily Adriana Lima is still a VS angel along with other long time models Lily Aldridge, and Alessandra Ambrosio, whom I love. Candice Swanepoel was definitely missed at the show this year, but I’m glad she skipped this year to focus on her baby, along with Behati Prinsloo. I hope the VS Fashion Show continues to promote diversity, but I also hope it opens the door for other young girls who wish to one day be the next Adriana Lima.
