The Up and Down Emotions of Returning to Campus

What I miss about school and what I will miss about home.

For some of you, the break from school only lasted a couple weeks. Those who chose to take intersession classes, or those who do not have a long break in between semesters, will most likely already be back on campus. As for me, I decided not to attend an intersession class this year. It was nice to take a break after my first semester of college. A lot of times I miss college and a lot of times I think about how much I'll miss home. Coming home from college is always easier whenever the break is short-lived. A month-long break means you have to readjust to family life, after you just adjusted to being an independent college student. It's turbulent at first, often times arguing with siblings and missing the independence, but then you get truly reinvested. You get back into the day-to-day routine of family life. The familiarity of living with your parents returns. This can be both annoying and comforting. The Spring Semester will be starting soon and it's time to return to a state of independence. This is both exciting and nerve-wracking. It's easier now that you're comfortable with the school, but it's still hard to let go of the familiarity of home. Here are some things that I miss from school and from home. Hopefully you can relate!

What I missed from school:

1. Friends:

I miss my friends from school. It's nice to have friends that are away from my hometown. In small towns like this people have a tendency to know everybody. It's nice to have friends who's parents don't mingle with your parents on a regular basis. It allows me to feel like an independent adult.

2. The Barista

Campus coffee shops are basically a God-sent. The convenience of stopping to buy a latte or iced chai on the way to class is amazing. At home you have to drive to town in order to have your favorite drink. It's way less convenient.

3. The Studying

Yes, I do in fact enjoy the studying. It's actually one of the things I miss the most about college. I like learning new things. Studying relaxes my mind and gives me a purpose. I've attempted to read some of the material prior to the new semester, but it's harder to motivate yourself when there are no upcoming exams to study for.

Missed From Home

1. Family

Obviously, family is going to be on this list. They're the main people you see when you return from college. After first returning from college, family can seem like a pain. It can seem like a burden to have to listen to your parents. Your siblings are most likely way more annoying then you remembered them. Eventually that all changes. You start to feel the familiarity of being at home. Of course your siblings are still annoying and your parents still treat you like a child, but you'll still miss them immensely. You start missing the little things, like playing cards or eating dinner. You know that'll change soon. The people you surround yourself with change between home and college, and the shift can be difficult.

2. Pets

My dogs will be so dearly missed. My dogs are like family to me. My school offers pet-friendly housing to upperclassmen. If it weren't for that knowledge, it'd be significantly harder for me to make it through the school years. I'm so excited at the prospect of having one of my dogs with me next year. It keeps me studying hard, knowing that after this year I'll hopefully have a little piece of my family with me.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
