On October 7, 2016, a very uninvited guest made his way up the coastline. This man traveled all the way from Haiti to here in the United States. He left chaos and destruction behind him everywhere he went. He wasn't welcome anywhere... so like any unwelcome narcissist he left a mark to let the world know that he wasn't going to go about his business civilly, and what a mark he made! He shook up our world, he made people hurt, he even made some people perish. After all of this destruction, it might appear that he had successfully made that mark, but he made one monumental mistake.
Matthew forgot what type of world he was dealing with.
He forgot that this world, as imperfect and broken as it may be, still has a heart beating deep down inside its brokenness. A heart that doesn't see the skin color of a nation but instead sees the eyes of a hurting people that need a miracle. A heart that knows about the battered and beaten path left by a storm, but sees hope for a new tomorrow. A heart that loves people.
The people that keep this heart beating, the people that see things this way, are only a handful because not everyone will let themselves love this big. Thankfully it only takes a few. One flame can light up the darkness. I have seen so many prayers go up for Haiti, Florida, and South Carolina in response to the destruction, those prayers are flames in the darkness. As just one person in a world of billions, I encourage you to keep it going until a fire ignites so big that everyone has to take notice. So just maybe that heart made up of a handful will grow and the world that Matthew thought he had destroyed, will show him that evil never wins because good always prevails.
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:2
