The United States of America is one of the richest, most powerful countries in the world. People have glamorized the American Dream as something to strive for. Many believe this is the best country in the world.
So, how come our government doesn't do more to address global poverty?
Let's look at some statistics.
First, about 736 million people live in extreme poverty. Half of these people are in five countries: Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Ethiopia and Nigeria.
This is a staggering number. Additionally, over 2 billion people lack regular access to safe and sufficient food.
What's even more shocking: world hunger could be eliminated with just an extra $265 billion a year for resources. While this sounds like a lot of money, it is pocket change compared to the 2018 United States Defense Budget of $668 billion.
People around the world are suffering. We are citizens of the United States, but first we are global citizens, and we have a duty to help our fellow humans.
Please contact your congressional leaders and encourage them to support key poverty-reducing legislation, including the End Tuberculosis Now Act and the Girls LEAD Act. It's time to step up.
