I have always been fascinated by the Tudor Dynasty, especially by Henry IIV's six wives. Anne Boylen has always intrigued me the most, however. Her struggle for power was very similar to Henry's. So in that vein, here is a villanelle that I wrote about her demise. It's called The Trial of Anne Boleyn. It's inspired by Genevieve Bujold's portrayal of Anne in the classic film Anne of the Thousand Days.
I stand here at the trial
wringing my hands like a nervous bird
I know, I know, I have committed no crime.
My eyes look past the crowds gone viral
Heads high, eyes bright
I stand here at the trial.
You were so obsessed with retaining power
And for that, I was sentenced to the Tower;
I know, I know, I have committed no crime.
With the "B" at my throat
I am led to the block like a goat
I stand here at the trial.
You will go on to take four more wives
Unfortunately for them, you will end all their lives
I know, I know, I have committed no crime.
The blade falls
My head rolls
I know, I know, I have committed no crime
For my red-headed daughter will be God's new divine.
