The Ultimate Guide To A Weekend In Mackinac

A couple weeks ago I got to experience my first weekend in Mackinaw city, Michigan. As a kid growing up in Michigan, well at least where I am from, Mackinac Island is the place to go especially on field trips in school. I never went the two times I was offered but I’m happy I waited and went with my family. No matter where you are from, Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island are a must.

1. If youre staying in Mackinaw City, you need to get a hotel room with a view of the water.

Nothing beats sitting on your balcony at night watching the sun go down, the lights turn on the bridge, and then waking up again to the beautiful view of the water.

2. When shopping for clothing and souvenirs, check around first to make sure you are getting the best deals and prices.

There are seriously endless amounts of stores in the mall area with the coolest souvenirs, clothing and much more.

3. Stopping in at Pizza Palace is a must.

I don’t care if its breakfast, lunch, dinner or all three, you have to go to Pizza Palace. Its hands down the best pizza (and cheese bread) I've ever eaten.

4. Make room for fudge.

Looking left and right, there is fudge everywhere. Any kind you could dream of, there is, and they are not stingy with the free samples so eat away!

5. Take the early ferry rides to get an exclusive tour of the Mackinac Bridge.

It adds about 15 minutes extra to the ride, but the history you learn and the view is incredible and makes it worth it.

6. Take a carriage ride around the island.

The carriage stops at the butterfly house, arch rock, Fort Mackinac and ends at the Grand Hotel.

7. You need to see Arch Rock and all of its beauty.

You may be turned off of the idea because it is simply just a rock, but it is one of the coolest things I’ve seen and I could’ve spent all day looking at the view.

8. Fort Mackinac for all of you history lovers.

I must say the walk up to the fort nearly killed me, but the history, the view, the hands on experience is unlike any other.

9. While at the fort, visit the Tea Room.

It is a fabulous place to stop to get some appetizers and lemonade, and to also enjoy the best view on the island. You are technically at the highest point on the island and you can see everything.

10. Rent bikes or walk the perimeter of the island.

Although I did not do the bikes, I did walk majority of the island and I couldn’t handle the beauty all around me. It really is breathtaking.

11. Last but not least, admire the Grand Hotel.

It is extremely expensive to spend a weekend there, might I add its $10 to just walk up in front of it, but I’m sure it is worth it for those who enjoy the high class life.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
