Ahh.....New York. The best city in the entire world. It's loud, it never gets tired and I could spend the rest of my life there in complete, crowded bliss. However, I'm just a visitor (for now...) After multiple visits to the Big Apple, I consider myself quite an expert now. For this reason, I've compiled some of my top things to do, while including all of the hilarious/dramatic/interesting things that have happened to me while on my visits (like always.)
1. Take the subway.
Not the restaurant. The train. SO many people gawk at me when I tell them this, but this is by far the cheapest and fastest way to get around. It's crowded and gross and hot, but it makes you feel super New York-ey (just created that word, you're welcome!) You'll meet actual locals, too, who usually give really good recommendations.
2. Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry because it's FREE!!!
The Ferry is primarily used for employees who work in Manhattan, but live in Staten Island. It's completely free and offers STELLAR views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.
However, make sure that when you get to the Staten Island side, you turn around and get right back on. My sweet, sweet grandmother got off on the Staten Island side and thought she was back in Manhattan. To make it even better, we were on the last ride over before they closed for the night. We couldn't find her anywhere when we went to get back on, and she ended up calling me from some random cab driver's phone. Thankfully, we found her and departed back to Manhattan in tow, but you can never be too careful peeps.
3. Go see MetLife Stadium.
I will be the first one to say that the main reason to do this is to husband search. (I know I'm supposed to marry an NFL player, I just know.) This story that I'm about to relay is my favorite New York story ever. A fun fact to know and tell is that the stadium is actually in New Jersey. If you're going across state lines, cab fares double, so I decided I would take the train.
My mom and I (of course I made her come along) took the subway to Penn Station. We then took an above-ground train to Secaucus, New Jersey. It was here that we were told the bus to the stadium didn't run during the summer. However, we then saw that a Jehovah-Witness conference was taking place in the stadium on this particular day. So, we did what any person would do: we pretended to be Jehovah-Witnesses, snuck on the bus and then got all-access to the stadium.
Note: I would not recommend doing this again because I was wearing a Jets jersey, so I'm pretty sure they all knew we were faking. Oops.
4. Go get some culture.
And no, taking pictures on the steps of the Met pretending to be on "Gossip Girl" doesn't count, friends. My favorite thing to do while in New York is to go to the Broadway plays. The best advice I can give on this is to go to the TKTS booth in Times Square, where you can get tickets for that night's show for up to half-off. My mom and I did this for every musical we saw, and we ended up getting Orchestra seats for 50% of the normal price. The lines may look intimidating, but they go by super-fast.
5. Go see Yankee Stadium.
Once again, a perfect place to husband search. I got to see Derek Jeter play in his last season at Yankee Stadium, and it's something I'll never forget. Even though he's not there anymore, this is still a classic sight to see.
6. Go big or go home.
It's New York. This is where my dramatics are not only accepted, but even deemed normal. Do something that you wouldn't usually do -- whether that's getting a new makeover, getting your hair professionally styled or anything else like that. This is a time to pamper yourself! (Also, you should pamper yourself for the husband searching mentioned above...) One place I really love in the City is DryBar. They now have them all over the country, but the first one I ever went to was in New York. They style your hair and basically make you feel like you're famous, which is perfect for people like me.
Anytime I talk about my love affair with New York City, I always hear people say they have no desire to ever visit. New York has something for everyone and I think everyone should experience it at least once! Comment your favorite things to do below!
