We were 16 on that sunny but cold October day.
The grass was green and the leaves on the trees were a medley of colors.
Walking along the path in the woods, sinking into the mud with each step taken,
Twigs and leaves crunching underneath our feet.
As we ventured off the path, the terrain became rough and unpredictable
Every step we took was different than the one we had previously taken.
After an eternity of hiking had passed, we came across a stone tunnel.
From the top, it seemed like any ordinary tunnel,
But as we scaled down the hill and landed in a small pond,
We realized it was not your ordinary tunnel.
It was a tunnel that seemed to have no end, and omitted a scent of dampness.
Two adventurous teenagers, standing there, contemplating whether or not to enter,
Our hearts were racing although it felt as if we were frozen in time.
Low and behold, we decided to enter.
Shuffling sideways, palms pressed up against the inside of the cold, smooth wall, the temperature began to drop and the light disappeared from our world.
The ledge we walked on was incredibly thin; one wrong step would send us into what appeared to be a murky puddle.
Then, almost as quickly as our senses seemed to vanish, they returned with great capacity.
And then, we saw the most beautiful opening of land.
It was an enormous grassy field, with flowers all around and the bright blue sky up above.
The light was brighter than ever, a sky bluer than I could ever imagine.
There were sounds of the birds chirping, bees buzzing, and the wind rustling through the bushes.
We sat there for a while and contemplated what we had just done.
There was only one thought on my mind the entire time:
Sometimes, you have to go through the darkness and uncertainty to see the beauty of it all.
