When I decided I wanted to study journalism in college, I knew right away it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've always had a love for writing; there's a great comfort in knowing that I have a way to express myself in a personal way and being able to share what I love with the rest of the world makes it all the better. I found writing to be my escape and studying the art of journalism and seeing where it could take me in the future is exciting.
Although, it isn't all that easy. There's a lot of hard work that goes into being a journalism major. I'm sure that most, if not all of, my peers in the same boat can agree that some of these are undeniable truths about being a journalism major...
1. When people ask you why you decided to major in a "dying profession."
I'll just make it plain and simple for you...

2. Your AP Stylebook is your best friend.

3. "Deadline." A word that becomes a part of your everyday vocabulary.
Between all of your courses, your job at your college's newspaper, and your internship - deadlines play an extremely important role in your journalistic career.
4. Being a part of your school's newspaper gives you the inside scoop about what's happening on campus.

5. Trying to decide whether or not to share your own article is always a constant predicament.
Should you share it on Facebook? Should you share it on Twitter? Maybe both? Hmm... Yes, yes you should. Get your writing out there.
6. You're in love with everything that has to do with New York City.

NYC is the journalism capital of the world, and working at a big time publication in a beautiful office overlooking the skyline is definitely one of your goals.
7. The hours you spend editing and rewriting your work makes you really wish a coffee IV existed.

8. Despite the hard deadlines, the late nights, etc., you know it's all going to be worth it.

Yeah, being a writer means you're going to go through some periods where you think your work isn't good enough, the criticism of others who think you're wasting your time, and the beginning of your career is probably going to look like a scene right out of "The Devil Wears Prada." But as future journalists, we're going to get to tell and sometimes even create stories for a living. And that alone is just one of the many reasons why I love what I do.
