Are you a business owner or CEO? Well, I've got a deal for you! With this simple strategy, you can save more than 20% on your employee payroll: Hire only women! President Barack Obama himself said that women only make about 79% of what men do for equal work. Hallelujah business owners, enjoy those savings!
Except it's a big, fat lie. In fact, the terrifying "Gender Wage-Gap" hasn't been that large since about 1985.
Fast forward a few decades to 2010 and you'll see a different story. According to Pew Research Center, the actual difference as of 2012 was only 7%. Economists agree that the gender wage-gap as we know it is absolutely fictitious. For example, Mark Perry of the American Enterprise Institute did a report on the gender wage-gap and women's earnings in 2014. According to this, the total for all women's earning nationwide compared to men's was 83%, all the way up to 94% when considering marital status and children. Or take the word of Harvard University professor Claudia Goldin, who while in an interview with Freakonomics discussed how economists just can't find the evidence of discrimination against women when it comes to pay.
As we can see, there is still a difference between what men make on average versus what women make on average, but it's a far cry from what Obama and the rest of the left will tell you.
Now, why is there still a gap, a difference here? Well, the leftist cronies in the White House and in mainstream media will tell you that it's due to the "War on Women" in the United States carried out by conservatives. And how it is their discrimination that keeps this horrible wage gap alive. Except that's not exactly true. At all. Not even a little bit. The thought of this is not only absurd, but completely unsupported by any observable evidence. So then, why does the gap persist?
Once again we can thank economists and research centers like Pew for providing the answer.
Generally, it boils down to choices. We all make them, and yes, they do affect our lives. And yes, they can even affect our income. The largest and most prevalent factor, according to the research, is children. Having a family tends to affect your life, both personal and business. Pew Research released this study in 2015 talking about how women are statistically more likely than men to adjust their careers due to their family life. Or another study released earlier the same year, which discusses how women have a more difficult time balancing family and work. These are just two studies done which show a major reason why we see a gap in the earnings between the two genders. Here's a third: In 2013 Pew Research released the information regarding how they measured the gender wage-gap in their studies. A very important statistic to point out here is the fact that women are twice as likely as men to work part time. Another possible reason for the wage-gap is that women aren't negotiating for higher salaries as aggressively as men. According to the Nation Bureau of Economic Research, women just don't negotiate wages as often as men.
Yes, there is a gap. But looking at observable evidence, that gap is in total earnings, not in hourly wages. It is factually incorrect to say that there is a "Wage-Gap" between men and women in the United States today. The earnings gap is real, it does exist. But it's not 79%, or 77% like Obama and the left try to tell you. We've seen that when considering age alone, the gap dissolves to 93%. When considering the choices the average woman makes in the United States? The gap virtually disappears.
We have to be careful today with what we hear in the mainstream media. "Issues" like this are fabricated on a near-daily basis, and as a people we are responsible for investigating them, and bringing the truth to light.
The Gender Wage-Gap is a myth, and it has been proven false an uncountable number of times.
