Joy, that simple word can have so much power. Everyone desires joy on one level or another, but it is an emotion that everyone longs for.
Webster’s Dictionary defines joy as, “(n) A lively emotion of delight and pleasure. To be glad; rejoice”.
There is a difference between happiness and joy. Happiness is an emotion that can fade at any given moment. It can disappear into the background when trials arise; however, joy is different. Joy is an emotion that is deeply rooted and intertwined with rejoicing. Joy is not easily shaken because it has a firm foundation.
Even in the midst of trials, joy can be found because it is rooted in the character of who God is. God is joy, love, justice, mercy and grace. When we find our sense of delight in the Lord, we do not just become happy, our hearts become filled with the firm foundation of joy.
However, that being said, as Christ followers we still don’t have “perfect” lives and constantly have a good attitude, in fact, Jesus says that will go through hard times:
I have told you these things, so that in me you will have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. - John 16: 33 (NIV).
What we need to remember, though, is that God is constant and never changing. When we believe that truth, joy turns from a desire to a reality.
Joy is deep satisfaction and delight in the Lord. Joy is a sense of security, knowing that the creator of the heavens and earth deeply loves you. I don’t know about you, but when I spend time with the Lord, I become overjoyed and filled with life; I feel refreshed and renewed.
Joy is simple, really.
It is knowing and truly having faith that Jesus has overcome the world and that He is using your story for the glory of the King.
In this world, we try to fulfill that longing for joy with something other than God. Whether that be friends, relationships, money, affirmation, or objects, we learn that in the end, they will not bring true joy.
Everlasting Joy can only be found in the one who created it.
When we get to know God and His character, we cannot help but be transformed by His love, justice, mercy and just to top it off, joy.
Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. - Psalm 47: 1 (NIV).
In the confusion of this world, God is faithful and full of surprises. When we seek Him with a passionate hunger, we experience joy in its purest form.
