If you had told me four years go that I would Go Greek once going to college, I would have laughed in your face. I never even considered Greek Life and never thought it would be for me while I was in high school, yet here I am on the Executive Board for my sorority.
Prior to deciding to attend a University, all I knew about Greek Life was the stereotypes of partying and drop-dead gorgeous blondes portrayed on TV. And, of course, I didn't fit that stereotype.
Let me tell you, there are some things that people and the media will never tell you about going Greek.
First I'm going to tell you that it is the best decision I have ever made. If not for taking a chance and going through recruitment, I never would have found the organization that changed my life.
Thanks to Greek Life, I have become a better version of myself. I have found my voice, and learned to use it. I have given my input on issues within my chapter and with other things on campus.
If it weren't for Greek Life, I never would have become the leader that I am today. In my first year, I took on an executive position, and now I am in my second position on Exec. Both of these positions have taught me so much about myself, and about how I handle pressure and stress.
I've also gotten to have experiences of a lifetime thanks to Greek Life. In 2016, I was able to attend my sorority's bi-annual convention. This experience allowed me to grow closer to sisters from my chapter as well as meet sisters from all over the country and in various walks of life.
Because of Greek Life, I have also built relationships with some of the most amazing people I have ever met. I have gained mentors, I've been able to be a mentor, I've become close with people I would have never even met if it had not been for Greek Life.
You've probably realized that I've only mentioned positives about going Greek, but that's only because the negatives aren't necessarily "negative" things.
For instance, Greek Life is time-consuming. Because of this, I have learned so much about time management. I am a full time student, I have a job, sometimes two jobs, and I hold a leadership position. I've learned to divide my time wisely between all the things I do thanks to my involvement in my sorority.
Another "negative" shown in the media is drama. But, you honestly can't tell me that you don't expect there to be some drama when you get fifty girls in the same place for long periods of time. It is inevitable in every organization or group of people. Thanks to Greek Life, I have learned to resolve issues peacefully and the way that is best fit for the situation.
Lastly, the biggest "issue" portrayed in the media is partying. Just like anyone, those involved in Greek Life do like to have fun. That being said, we don't throw massive parties and we certainly don't go out every night. There are GPA requirements all organizations and members must meet, and we take that very seriously. Greek Life has taught me to balance things in life the way the organizations balance scholarship, philanthropy, and the fun times.
With all this being said, I encourage anyone on the fence about Going Greek to just do it! It won't hurt to try it out. And if it really isn't for you, that's perfectly okay. I just hope that maybe Greek Life can positively impact your life the way it has mine.
