The Truth About Athletics at Franklin

Is almost everyone an athlete?

The simple answer to non-grizzlies is: Yes. Our campus is home to over 20 NCAA Division III, varsity sports teams. So when you figure the numbers out, roughly more than 60 percent of the campus is involved with athletics in one way or another.

It’s crazy to think that so many students are involved with athletics at our school. But honestly, it’s what drives people to come to Franklin (aside from the awesome atmosphere and people that attend FC or course). Personally, I was recruited to come to Franklin on behalf of athletics and couldn’t be happier that I decided to enroll.

The athletics-centered atmosphere is unbeatable at the Division III level. With that being said, we always have fans supporting our teams wherever we go and not just for one team. As part of our newest varsity sports team, for me there truly was no better feeling than having so much support from fellow students at our games during our inaugural season. It’s also an amazing feeling to be around such like-minded, driven individuals. It really inspires you to put 120 percent into what you do, because you basically have the whole campus behind you. You also have people who you can truly relate to -- especially if you had an away game the night before a big exam, which you probably stayed up all night to study for (we all understand the true struggle).

Not to mention the faculty (at least most of the faculty) is very understanding about student athletes missing class for games or practices, and are willing to work with you (since most students are athletes). It’s also pretty awesome when your professor asks you how your game went and you can say you just crushed Hanover.

At Franklin College we also pride ourselves on the tradition of teams being a family. I can honestly say in high school and throughout my previous competitive sports experience I’ve never had such close teammates as I have had at FC. At Franklin your teammates, more than likely, are your ride-or-dies as far as almost anything. They are pretty much willing to go to the ends of the earth for you if you need them to. These are the same people that will cheer you on and push you to reach your goals on and off the field, as well as being the people you can spend 24 hours of the day with and somehow not be tired of (which is kind of a crazy thought).

What is also crazy to think about is the fact that these people will really and truly be your best friends for life. Because let’s be real, who do you know that wasn’t some hot-shot in high school, that still talks to their hometown high school friends all the time? Huh? I have got you there!

An amazing thing that we also have at Franklin is our sense of unity between all of our sports teams (despite the occasional rift in the waves). In times of trouble and times of success we can come together as a whole. It’s such a (for lack of a more elegant term) cool experience. We somehow, since it’s beyond my understanding, come together like magnets to a fridge and just stick together.

I honestly think this is what sets our school apart from the rest and makes Franklin College a unique place to attend for your undergraduate education.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
