Humans vs. Zombies

Perspective from both sides of the game.

Humans vs. Zombies

This campus-wide game of tag has become more intense than I could've possibly imagined. Now that I'm a zombie, I can live to tell both sides of the struggle.

As a human, you are so paranoid about getting to your class or anywhere else, for that matter. The slightest noise will tip you off and you will lose your sanity.

As you run away from a zombie, you realize how out of shape you actually are.

"Zombieland" was not kidding about rule number one. You have to run everywhere so fast.

Then, once you realize how defenseless you truly are, you don't even know how to feel.

Completing missions goes from intense fear to a determination caused by all of your built up adrenaline. All of the humans look at each other before they come up with a game plan.

Then it feels so good to complete a mission and you start to get cocky.

Don't get too comfortable now, human. Zombies are still crawling around.

Once you get tagged and become a zombie, you go through three emotions really fast.

The first emotion is a failure. You're so upset about not being able to complete your mission and stay alive.

Sometimes, it's a really small mistake that ruins everything.

The second step is acceptance. I mean, there's no going back. At least you tried.

Lastly, it's freedom. I didn't realize how free I would feel after switching that bandana to my head. It's like I had one of those moments where my life flashed before my eyes and I saw how happy I was again to not be paranoid and to walk to places. I was so happy to stop forcing myself into cardio. It's just a really great feeling of pure joy.

Being a zombie is great in a lot of ways, as you can imagine, but, like all things, there is a downside.

The saddest thing to me was losing my friends.

None of my friends wanted to hug me or even hang out with me.

They all believed that I would be evil enough to trick them into a tag. So, say goodbye to your friends.

Another really annoying thing was getting socks thrown at me when I was minding my own business and walking to class. A lot of the times I was like, "I just ate, so I'm not gonna chase after you. Go about your way."

Of course, they wouldn't listen to me.

Way to go sock ninja, you've accomplished nothing other than annoying me.

All in all, with ups and downs, it was fun to be on both sides and to play this game in the first place.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
