The Triangle of College

Pick Two

Something I learned right away at university was the triangle of life. Basically, your life is like this triangle shown below. You have three options to choose from to define your life, but you can only choose two. How sick and twisted does that sound? But if you really consider it, it makes complete sense.

1. Good Grades and Enough Sleep

This happens to be the combination I compare myself to. I need a lot of sleep to function normally. I am not a successful person on less than nine hours of sleep. I also want good grades; to complete my double major and minor within three years. The only malicious part about this combination is I do not have a lot of time to spend with my friends. I essentially do not have much of a social life, but it works for me.

2. Good Grades and Social Life

This combination is baffling to me! I do not know how a person could get good grades and have a social life, with little sleep. An example of this lifestyle, to me, would go as follows:

Wakes up at 7:00am
Class from 8:00am-3:00pm
Studies 3:00-7:00pm (Insert social life) 8:00pm-2:00am
<Repeat>

If you think you can make this lifestyle work and be successful, then all the more power to you! Good luck!

3. Social Life and Enough Sleep

Honestly, if you would rather have a stellar social life and get enough sleep, then why be in college? You would save yourself and your family a lot of money if you took a few years off to have fun and figure your life out. I just believe that college would be a waste of time for someone who may not show up to class, let alone apply themselves.

DON'T FREAK OUT

This is not a rule, and I don't think you have to follow this diagram at all! It's just a funny example that I believe to be true for most people. I think all three can be accomplished, and those people have great time management skills and discipline to get work done.

The Upcoming Year...

To everyone starting college as freshman, I wish you the best of luck. Get out there and join clubs, meet friends, kick butt, and enjoy yourselves. In the blink of an eye you'll be walking down another stage, to the rest of your lives.

To everyone else returning to college, remember who you are. Keep your mind set on all the things you want to accomplish. It will be hard, but look how far you've come already. Let's ninja kick this freaking school year right in the bean bags!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
