For most high schools and colleges, it is time to prepare for homecoming. It really is a fun time for students to get together to celebrate their school spirit. Homecoming is an event that welcomes the students back to a new school year, even though homecoming usually takes place late September/early October. Many of the events include the football games, the pep rally, the spirit week, the parade, the fun activities that bring students together, and of course, the homecoming case. This is a favorite of mine because all of the activities that bring people together to just have a good time with their friends. One may not be prepared for what's to come their way when homecoming comes around, so here is a rundown of some of the events that may take place throughout the week.

1. Spirit Week

This may not happen too much in college, but in high school, a part of homecoming would have to be the spirit week. Spirit week consists of different themes each day that students would have to dress up in a way that goes along with the theme of that day. Whether it would be a theme that goes along with a movie, a television show, a sporting team or any other theme, spirit week is fun to show off just how much spirit you've got in you. Some schools may tally up the points on how each student dresses up so at the end of the week, there will be the top class that has the most students that were dressed up for spirit week.

2. Various Fun Activities

The fun activities that the programming board/student council put together is so the students can have fun outside of school. My college really does do different events each week because they want the students to be involved and to have as much fun as they can throughout the week. Some of these events may include performances from local groups that do improv, music, etc.; events to get free shirts and other school merchandise, karaoke and/or movie nights and so many others. They want to have a little bit of everything for the students so they can make sure they go to as many of these events as they can.

3. Parade and Pep Rally

These two things can go along with each other or one of them can happen at a high school while the other one can happen at a college or it could be the other way around. A parade can happen because it is a way for different clubs and organizations at the school to show off what they are all about. This can be done with car floats or with students walking with the decorations that they have created. On the other hand, the pep rally is set up the afternoon before the big football is to take place and it really does involve a lot of exciting activities to get the students pumped up for the game. I remember the pep rallies that I went to in high school were all about being pumped up and being filled with fun activities. Either way, both of these activities are guaranteed to have the students become pumped up for the football game.

4. Football Game

Speaking of which, the football game is also a fun event that most students choose to attend. I'm saying most because there maybe that few percentage of students that may or may not be a big fan of the actual sport of football. Even though I am not a big sports person, I enjoy going to the game because I feel like it is the big game that the students are really excited about. It's a game that really shows the spirit of the game and how well the football team can play when the majority of the school community chooses to attend this game. I like to attend the game not only for the excitement of the game and supporting the football team, but I also love to go to with my friends because it just makes it more fun for me instead of going by myself.

5. Homecoming Dance

Finally, there's the big event that a lot of people throughout the school are excited for the most: the homecoming dance. It's an event where the students come in their lovely dresses and fancy suits and they come to dance the night away. The dance may or may not include a three course dinner, depending on what school you go to. I really have enjoyed going the past few years because for me, it's all about going with the people that matter to me: my friends and we just have fun dancing and enjoying each other's company. The music is always fantastic, everyone is so dressed nicely and the memories that one can make are just unforgettable. Make the most of this night and all of the other events that happen during homecoming week because some fun memories are sure to ensue from them.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
