Some of my favorite characters, be it in TV shows or movies or books, are villains. This tends to be because they have really interesting backstories and many shows or books go above and beyond to give you a more intimate glimpse into the villain’s mind and why they think the way that they do.
Musicals are especially good at this because, unlike books or movies or TV shows, characters literally spend a good portion of the musical singing about their feelings in order to advance the plot. They have to, or certain things just wouldn’t make sense.
This means that main characters get really great songs, and they are fantastic and super fun to belt out to in the car, but it also means that the villains get really great songs and those are often even more fun to belt out in the car.
Here is a countdown of ten of the best Broadway villain songs:
10. You’ll See – “Rent”
Now, I know. Benny isn’t the only one who sings this song and arguably there are other villains in “Rent” so really, does it count? Yes. Yes, it does.
9. The Bottom Line – “Newsies”
Any time a villain is paired with an upbeat, catchy tune, I get ridiculously happy for no reason.
8. Candy Store – “Heathers”
I listened to this again just to make sure I was putting it in the right number, and I had a terrible flashback to high school.
7. Stars – “Les Misérables”
Javert is so fascinating for so many reasons, and this song sums up all of the reasons why I love him.
6. Dentist – “Little Shop of Horrors”
When my mom asks me why I’m terrified of the dentist, I show her this song.
5. Pretty Women – “Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”
This was one of the first Broadway songs I ever heard, so I had to add it to the list, but its also just a really fantastic song and Turpin is incredibly creepy.
4. The Neva Flows – “Anastasia”
Although I will be forever bitter that they replaced Rasputin, I can’t deny that this song is extremely well done.
3. You’ll Be Back – “Hamilton”
Find me one thing wrong with this song. Find me one. Not only is it perfect, but it’s actually extremely essential to the plot, so there’s that too.
2. Blood in the Water – “Legally Blonde”
Any song that tells me to read Thomas Hobbs is a song fit for a villain.
1. Cell Block Tango – “Chicago”
I say “I didn’t do It, but if I’d done it…” more often than I care to admit honestly.
