6 Things To Never Say During Midterms Week

When tensions are high, it's best to just stay away from a student under pressure.

With midterms week coming up, there will be a bunch of cranky college kids running on no sleep from pulling all-nighters studying. This is not the week to nag us about not cleaning or for not dressing well. We have a lot going on and do not want to take it out on you. There are a few things that should never be said during midterm or finals week. You might get yelled at or be on the receiving end of passive aggressive comments if the following things are said.

1. You look tired

Yes! I will look tired because I haven't slept yet. I have two tests and two papers all due in one week. I will look tired, be cranky and, most likely, will barely sleep. Do not mention my disheveled appearance and my caffeine high. I know that I look tired and have bags under my eyes.

2. Do you want to go out?

Yes, I want to. No, I can’t. While I spend hours in the library, I will be jealous of you going out and having fun. The FOMO is real, and I will think about it as I read my geology textbook.

3. How are you feeling?

I will most likely give you an overly long response about all the work I have to do and how I have not slept. I will possibly rant, and maybe I will shed a tear or two. I apologize ahead of time for this long rant and negative attitude.

4. Do you want to go get a salad?

No, I want pizza. I want carbs and anything fattening that I can find. I want brownies, cookies and comfort food. I should eat a salad to be healthy and I probably should stop drinking coffee, but that doesn’t mean I am going to.

5. Want to hang out?

I would love to if I didn’t have so much to do. I would love human interaction and a nice hug. I just have a paper to write and two tests to study for. If you want to study then yes, but if you do not, then please wait for next week. I apologize for being so busy. I really do.

6. You have an attitude

Yes, I do have an attitude. I am very stressed and do not mean to take it out on you. Everyone has an attitude this week, it is not just me. I am sure you have an attitude, too, when you're extra stressed.

Good luck this week, and be considerate to the fact that everyone is tired, overworked and cranky!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
