2016 is just another year in the era of binge watching television. We now live in a world where you can watch an entire season of a TV shows in a few days or less if you put your mind to it. The amazing thing is, as life goes on, more amazing shows come on the air and it's impossible to watch them all. So, without further adieu, the top 10 TV shows you have to watch.
10. "Person of Interest"
Just this year, "Person of Interest" wrapped itself up with a mind-blowing and heart-wrenching series finale. Many people watched it, loved it, and now have to move on with their lives, but that's not what that means for everyone else. If you haven't watched "Person of Interest," it just became any binge watchers dream. The shows all wrapped up so you can glue yourself to your TV or computer and binge watch all five seasons.
The show cast Michael Emerson, the two-time Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee alongside a superb cast and crew. The writers of this show have a wild imagination, but holy crap, it works. When a show is based off conspiracy theories, it's very easy for the writers to lose control, but bravo, the writers of "Person of Interest" did an amazing job. So, a great cast, great writing, and it's the perfect time to binge watch it. Sounds like a win-win right here.
9. "The Originals"
"The Originals" is a story about the oldest family of vampires living their life in modern-day New Orleans and about all the supernatural threats they face. It is a spin-off of "The Vampire Diaries," and I dare say, this spin-off is better than the original (pun intended). "The Vampire Diaries" has been marked as a "girly" show, and this will dissuade a lot of male viewers from "The Originals," but overall, trust me when I say it's worth it. It's Gods vs. Gods. Powerful beings fighting for greater power. Vampires how people want to see them.
The cast is great, British actors, American actors, a beautiful combination placed in a beautiful setting. The story line keeps you at the edge of your seat, and they do love their cliffhangers. It's the type of show that'll have you cheering as hearts get literally ripped out and crying when the show kills any minor or major character. So far, the show has just concluded it's third season earlier in the year and it has plans for a fourth. If you want to be swept away in an amazing supernatural world that's not cheesy and overdone, "The Originals" is there for you.
8. "Lost"
Like the titles says, if you don't pay attention to this show, you will get lost in the plot. The show has a great cast, but one that is very fluid. One episode you will love this character, a few episodes later you will absolutely despise them.
The show took a Golden Globe and several Emmy's in it's time and all for good reasons. It's a powerful drama and the writers did a great job helping the audience connect with every major character. It pushes limits, another show based off of conspiracies that lead into a supernatural world that is justified by science beyond what the rest of the world can understand. So, get lost in Lost, and you can always binge watch the whole show on Netflix.
7. "Rick and Morty"
Head on over to Adult Swim and die laughing at the adventures of "Rick and Morty." A satirical cartoon that depicts the story of a drunk grandfather that flies around in space with his very average, arguably below average, grandson. This a show that's so good, it's hard to explain to others without spoiling the show.
It's funny, the plot is amazing, and it just puts every other major network satire to shame ("Family Guy," "American Dad," sorry Seth MacFarlane). It's definitely not a children's show, but the writing is simply genius. The show so far has only had two seasons, so if you really try, you can finish watching it in less than day and then have to struggle waiting for the next season.
6. "Avatar: The Last Airbender"
"Avatar" is a children's cartoon, but that all changed when the fire nation attacked. To describe the show, all I can say is this, the story is beautiful and touches the heart, the drama is amazing for a show written for children, it simply makes a person contemplate the meaning of life and it'll make you laugh with the childish, but profound moment.
A greatly written series with amazing animation, it even won an Emmy. It's worth it to sit down and watch the three seasons about a continent at war with only one young hundred year old boy who can save them,
5. "Dexter"
Who doesn't like going inside the mind of the greatest serial killer in the world? "Dexter" is a show that is unparalleled out there, no show can compare to it. The acting and writing and the plot itself is on a level most shows strive to achieve (granted there's a lot of debate over the necessity of the last season).
Travel to Miami and meet a blood-spatter analysis for the police, Dexter, who also just happens to be your friendly neighborhood serial killer on the side. A lot of cursing, occasional nudity, and just a lot of really good writing and acting. "Dexter" is the type of show that will make you debate the pros and cons of becoming a serial killer yourself. Plus, it's taken home two Golden Globes, so you know it's already going to be good.
4. "Supernatural"
There are a lot of shows about supernatural beings and superheros and the likes, but "Supernatural" takes them all. Supernatural is a show that is now heading on to it's twelfth season, and that is the beauty of it. Every time someone criticizes Supernatural for overdoing it, they prove the critics wrong and drop amazing and moving episodes.
The show is well-known for it's lovable cast, writers who can write episodes that can make you laugh, cry, and every now and then just leave you scratching your head. It's a show that no one expected to get this far, but now that it is, fans are hoping it never ends.
3. "House"
This show is the meaning of a true medical drama (sorry "Grey's Anatomy" fans). It's dark and twisted and at the same time Hugh Laurie brings so much life to the character of Dr. House. The show in itself is inexplicably cast and everything from writing to production is amazing.
"House" had a whopping eight seasons that resulted in two Golden Globe wins, and the fans weren't satisfied when the show ended. I personally remember when House ended and wanting more. It's a rare thing, very often fans talk about how a show should end earlier when producers drag the show on for several more seasons, but House last eight seasons and left everyone wanting another eight.
2. "Breaking Bad"
What can I say about "Breaking Bad" that hasn't been said by everyone else. It's won so many awards that I've lost count. The acting, the writing, the producing, the directing, just about everything about this show was done right. There was no holding back and that made it work. It's simply the most intense show I have ever watched and it truly leaves you wanting to know what's next.
Your friends have watched it, and if you haven't, it's time you get to it and see what the hype is all about. Don't be that one hipster that doesn't watch Breaking Bad because you think it's overrated. It's not, and anyone who's watched can tell you that it is so beyond amazing that words simply can't describe the ecstasy of the show. Luckily, it's all over and on Netflix, so who needs to sleep? Binge watch "Breaking Bad."
1. "Game of Thrones"
Naked women. Dragons. Dwarfs. Decapitation. Everything you could want in one show. An amazing cast, amazing writers who know just what everyone wants even when we don't know that we want it. It's "Game of Thrones," and friends, winter is coming so if you haven't watched it, get a move along.
There are a lot of other amazing shows out in the world, but if you have the time, sit down and watch something that is truly a work of art and can make your mind spin.
