Ah, yes.
The inevitable article where I post my top 10 Disney "I want" songs because, of course, I love Disney and I have opinions. Now, you may be asking "What exactly is an 'I want' song?" The answer to that question is quite simple: you already know it. In any musical, an "I want" song typically appears towards the beginning of the show and is the mark of an active hero.
Jack Viertel, author of "The Secret Life of the American Musical," offers an excellent description of this convention. For a show, or Disney's case, a movie, to be worth our time, we have to hope that our heroes get what they want. The "I want" song lets the audience know exactly what the character wants and what they're willing to do to get it. Now that you've been accustomed to this idea, you're probably having all sorts of flashbacks to your favorite Disney movies.
Now, let's get started with my top ten list:
10. "Someday My Prince Will Come" from Snow White
"He was so romantic..."
As problematic and heteronormative as this song is, I still recognize that it is the very first Disney song that captured the hearts of the world. And apparently, it also captured the hearts of the Dwarves. It is absolutely adorable getting to see the Dwarves fall in love with the story that Snow White is telling them. The reason why this scored so low on the list mainly has to do with how much this movie creeped me out growing up. The Queen turning into an old hag? Creepy. The animation? Creepy. The storyline with the pig's heart and the Huntsman? Creepy.
Whew. Good song though.
9. "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast
"Little town... It's a quiet village..."
We hear that flute and suddenly we know that we're being transported to that quaint little French town where everyone is screaming "Bonjour" out their windows. This song has a little bit of everything in it. Not only does it serve as the "I want" song for Belle where we see exactly what she wants, but we also get to meet her entire community including the jerk Gaston that isn't even that cute. The melody is catchy and the orchestrations are just gorgeous.
This song would probably be higher up on the list if it wasn't for the fact that literally every high school has done this show in the past several years and not many of them have been good. It's gotten old, but every now and then I don't mind listening to it.
If I have to see one more performance of "Gaston," I WILL barf. Sheesh.
8. "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid
"Look at this stuff... Isn't it neat?..."
How can you have a list of Disney "I want" songs and not include this beauty? As tired of "The Little Mermaid" I am (I've done the show twice), I will never get tired of hearing Jodi Benson sing this song. Alan Menken is at his best with this entire score, including some of the additions written for the stage adaptation (I'm looking at you, "If Only (Quartet)"). This is a perfect example of an "I want" song--Ariel is literally spelling it out for the audience.
And as bratty as Ariel is, you can't help but feel for her and root for her as the movie progresses.
7. "Go the Distance" from Hercules
"I have often dreamed... Of a far-off place..."
I have to admit, "Hercules" was not one of my favorite Disney movies growing up. I steered more towards the princess movies, probably because of my older sister. However, as I've grown older, I've come to appreciate the score in this movie, specifically this song. The orchestrations are absolutely infectious and the determination of Hercules in this song is indeed inspiring. When I first heard this song, I remember humming the melody and attempting to sing along (even though I knew absolutely none of the words).
For the love of the gods, why is this not a stage musical yet? Especially with "I Won't Say I'm in Love"? C'mon Disney.
6. "Dangerous to Dream" from Frozen
"I can't be what you expect of me..."
I realize this song was written specifically for the stage adaptation of "Frozen" (and how mixed the reviews are for this show), but I really actually like this one. While it's not necessarily the "I want" song of Frozen (the actual "I want" song being "For the First Time in Forever"...but blah), I believe that it better captures the serious tone of the musical (or at least what it could be). I'm a sucker for ballads, especially when it is a strong character like Elsa singing it.
Seriously--this is so good.
5. "When Will My Life Begin" from Tangled
"7 A.M. ... The usual morning line-up..."
Okay, but how can you deny the vocal talents of Mandy Moore?
"Tangled" is definitely another one of those Disney movies that demands a stage adaptation in the near future. This fun, uptempo "I want" song is energetic and gets you hooked on Rapunzel right away. I originally wasn't as into Tangled as my peers growing up, but this song has definitely caught my attention. Not to mention, your heart just aches for Rapunzel as you realize just how small her world has been her entire life, trapped in that tower.
Ugh. So good. Did I mention Mandy Moore is so talented?
4. "Just Around the Riverbend" from Pocahontas
"What I love most about rivers is..."
As problematic as "Pocahontas" is in general, there is no denying that some of its music is some of the most gorgeous pieces written for a Disney movie. The animation in this sequence is gorgeous and the orchestrations are flawless. That waterfall sequence is breathtaking. I was never really a fan of "Pocahontas" growing up, but I was definitely a fan of the music.
Also, that raccoon is seriously one of the most adorable Disney animations ever drawn.
3. "Proud of Your Boy" from Aladdin
"Proud of your boy... I'll make you proud of your boy..."
Even though this song was (unfortunately) cut from the final cut of the film, Alan Menken made sure to revive it for the stage adaptation. This show was actually the first show that I saw on Broadway. I remember sitting in the audience and beginning to literally sob when Adam Jacobs came out onstage and sang this. It is so easy to relate to and one of the most touching and vulnerable songs for a man to sing onstage.
My only gripe with this song is that it's too short. I want more.
2. "Reflection" from Mulan
"Look at me... I will never pass for a perfect bride..."
How can anyone's heart NOT break listening to Mulan sing this captivating piece? I remember Mulan being one of my favorite movies growing up and we watched it often in my house. The badass nature of Mulan was empowering, and I remember getting so excited when I heard that there was a "Mulan 2" coming out. As excited as I am for the live action movie to be coming out (with correct racial casting, might I add), part of me is still disappointed in the fact that it's not a musical.
Ah, oh well. To dream.
1. "Out There" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
"Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone..."
I will admit. This movie has always had such a special place in my heart. Maybe it's because Quasimodo is my dream role, and I just want to belt "Made of Stone" at the top of my lungs one day. But this song has always meant so much to me, therefore it earns the top place. The score for Hunchback has got to be the best Disney score ever written—a collaboration between Menken and Schwartz is one of the best things to have ever occurred in Disney history.
Let's not forget that the stage adaptation was a thing. Still bitter that it didn't transfer to Broadway. Especially with Michael Arden as Quasimodo (my knees are weak as I write this).
Bonus Song: "Journey to the Past" from Anastasia
"Heart don't fail me now..."
Yes, yes. I'm aware that this is not a Disney movie. But I grew up thinking that it was and it wasn't until I was well past the age of believing that I realized it was not. Ahrens and Flaherty are two of my favorite songwriters of all time, and I was so excited when I heard that a stage adaptation was being created.
I absolutely love this movie and the music involved. Once again, Anya is such a strong female character that is surprising for a children's movie at this time.
And now... my top favorite Disney "I want" song of all time...
Hope you enjoyed my top 10 list of favorite Disney "I want" songs! As I was researching for this article, I kept coming across all of the popular Disney villain songs and had more fun listening to those. I spy another top 10 in the future!
