The Three Categories of Friendship

Which one do you fit into the most?

So I’m sitting in the car texting when my mother asks, “Who are you talking to?” When I tell her, she says, “Oh, is that one of your social media friends?” After which I respond “Yes it’s ____,” and she does the typical mom interrogation of what we’re talking about and why we’re talking so much. This question got me thinking about the types of friends that someone has, and how not all friends fit into these categories, but most can. Also, all of these friends touch your lives in a special way. Some push you to do more, some make you realize your level of confidence, and some will be there for you for life.

1. Social Media Friends

These are the friends that you may never have talked to in real life, but end up being your best friend on Snapchat or Twitter. They can be some of the most intelligent and open-minded people you have ever met, or the most closed-minded. I have not met someone in between. These people will always be there for you if no one else will. They will hype up your selfies on Instagram and retweet them on Twitter. They are always there to boost your confidence or hear you out.

2. School Friends

These are the friends that you can always count on at school. They may not hang out with you on the weekends necessarily, but there’s always a seat at their table for you. These are people that you compete against, who push you mentally and physically. School friends are mainly found to be from sports teams or clubs. They may not be the best at talking, but they’ll have your back on group projects and they’ll be your partner if you need one.

3. In-Betweens

These can be your best friends, or just good friends that you know will be there for you no matter what. They’ll never intentionally break your snap streak or unfollow you on Instagram. They’ll always hype you up and they’re there to listen to you and help you through the hard times. You can always count on them to let you stay with them on a break if you have nowhere to go. They’ll walk down a couple floors to zip up your dress if you can’t get it, or they'll even do your makeup for you. They’ll never let you eat a meal alone if you don’t want to. These are your future bridesmaids and groomsmen, the ones that are there for you until the end.

There may be more categories to friendship, but these are the categories that I have simplified in my brain. Some social media friends may end up being more that just social media friends, same with friends at school. Friends can come from the messiest of situations, and you could have even hated them at some point, but people can surprise you. Friends come and go, but the ones that stay are forever.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
