The Things You May Not Know About Thick, Unruly Hair

Hair is one way that a person can express him or herself. Some will color it, some will style it, and some just let it do its own thing. Everyone has their own hair routine that they have figured out for their own hair type. I have thick, unruly hair that has always been out of my control. I have talked to many people with hair types similar and taken advice on how to control my hair. However, even with treatment my hair still is in control and refuses to let me put a word in. Anyone with unruly hair would understand.

1. Your hair is never consistent.

From one day to the next, my hair never looks the same. Some days it is more on the curly side, while on others it is more wavy. There are even days when I wake up and my hair is sticking up in all directions.

2. Mornings are always interesting

When going to bed with a wet head you are asking for a nightmare in the morning. Your hair is all over the place and just getting it to lay on the right side of your head is a complex task.

3. You have to use conditioner

If you don't use conditioner you won't have hair, you will have a rat's nest. I go through so much conditioner. However, to keep my hair in check, it is worth it.

4. Straightening it can help calm down the craze

Even though my hair may not be consistent, straightening it typically calms it down. However, straightening takes time, because there is so much to straighten, and it makes your hair seem so much flatter.

5. The easiest way out of a bad hair day is a hat

Some days you just can't beat your hair. Hats do a good job covering up most of the unruliness, but there are days where it sneaks out under the hat. It seems that everyone knows that the hat is there just to cover up the mess below. At least I tried.

6. Sometimes it looks good in the morning, but not later in the day

You don't notice until you are washing your hands in the bathroom and happen to look in the mirror. How long has it been like that? It wasn't like that this morning, so why is it now? I don't know and I never will, but my hair never looks the way it does at the end of the day as it did in the morning.

7. People can tell when you are stressed

I have a habit when I'm stressed I play with my hair more. I have been told that the days when my hair is the messiest are the days when people can tell I am stressing over something.

8. The wind is your enemy

As pretty as it looks, that is not how hair acts in the wind. It gets in your face, your eyes, and, magically, gets stuck in the hinges of your glasses, which haven't moved. If anyone is down wind, odds are they have hair flying at them.

9. Your hair is everywhere

The hair that falls out of my head scares me. I don't know how I am not bald, Any time I run my hands through my hair there are strands in my hand and don't get me started on washing my hair.

10. There are the occasional days where your hair actually looks nice

I find that when my hair actually looks nice, I want to look at it more. It amazes me that my hair can look good considering I have seen the worst of it. Those are the days I truly love my hair. Though we fight and rarely get along, there are days my hair actually looks nice and presentable.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering.
