The Theory Of Mosquitoes

Why you and mosquitoes are actually the same.

I love summer so much. There is no school to stress about and no wintry clothes you have to bundle up in for when you walk out the door in 15 degree weather. I love almost everything about summer, with the exception of mosquitoes. I absolutely hate mosquitoes with a burning passion. I'm allergic to them and they are mortal nemesis, the bane of my existence, the only insects that make me cringe. Within minutes from being bitten, a mosquito bite enlarges to form a softball size lump on my arm, leg, face, or hand. It is ridiculous that this happens to me when I didn't even want a mosquito bite in the first place. Throughout my life I have always loathed mosquitoes and everything about them. They carry diseases like Malaria and Encephalitis that will not benefit me in any way whatsoever, so what is the point of having mosquitoes in the first place?

Interestingly enough people are not mosquitoes first choice in food. Horses, cows, and birds are a mosquitoes cup of blood, and I guess they taste much better than you and me. In fact, if you take into account a mosquito's feelings, they probably hate humans as much as we hate them. As much as I hate to admit it, mosquitoes are an important part of the food chain. They make tasteful meals to bats, birds, frogs, and even dragonflies. Without them, the whole natural order would be skewed into nothingness. So are they really that important? The simple answer to that is yes. The lengthy version of the answer is yes, they are really that important. You're next question might be why are you writing an article that's about mosquitoes? Why would someone even want to spend time thinking about an insect that causes such an annoyance to people? I do this because I think that mosquitoes and humans are really not that different from each other and we could learn a thing or two from them.

The first thing that connects mosquitoes to humans is that they are both annoying. Sure, they are different kinds of annoying, but annoying all the same. People have a knack for figuring out what annoys someone and constantly exploiting that weakness for their gain, just like how mosquitoes gain food by biting humans and annoying their host in the process. Please don't be like a mosquito and annoy people, it really grinds people's gears. People also have first choices about everything from food to animals to other people. I would rather not be a mosquitoes first choice, but being second or third choice to other people is hard to overcome. Even if you want to be first choice for a specific someone and you're not, don't worry because you're someone's first choice. Lastly, people in this day and age seem to think they aren't important, but just like a mosquito without you life would be thrown into chaos and nobody wants that, especially you.

So just remember this summer when you're eating watermelon and pineapple whip with your friends and you go to slap a mosquito, you and your blood sucking friend are really not that different deep, deep down.

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
