The good days, the bad days, and every day in between all gather together to create the stories of our existence that we will tell and be known by. For some of us, the good days are much less than the bad and it seems as though the good days come randomly and not as often as they should.
Depression is the thief of good days. Within a matter of simple moments, that positive mindset could be swept away from you, and you could be back to struggling for air. That's me a lot of the time, but last week I had one of the first truly ~good~ days filled with people I love, sunshine, and a lot of smiles and laughs.
I thought to myself at the end of the day: I want to remember this feeling. I want to remember that when I can't get out of bed, take care of myself, or literally want to escape my life...I had one truly good day. And so as I sat and thought about that, I wrote out 15 things I want to remember for when the bad days come.
1. There are only 24 hours in today.Â
Soon, this day will be over. Time passes the same for the good and bad days, and soon it will all be over. You just have 24 hours...and then it's over.
2. You woke up today. You're still here.Â
Today, you woke up in a safe place where you are surrounded around comforts and love. You woke up today and gave yourself a chance at another day living...be proud of that.
3. "Now is your time to shine."
No matter what, you are a bright human being. Sure, today your light is dimmed or even completely turned off. But your light is still inside of you...and NOW is your time to shine.
4. Be gentle with yourself.Â
Please remember the greatness you have within you to do whatever you set your mind to. Your body is your temple...please be kind to it.
5. Be the love and kindness you might not have received today.Â
Open a door, share a smile, send an encouraging message. Remember that there are other people out there who may be hurting too...you could be their one reason to keep going today.
6. You are enough.Â
On February 1, 2019 you were told a million times over that you are enough by one influential woman who saves you endlessly. Let this be a reminder. You are worthy of living.
7. You matter to someone. There are people who love you.Â
I know it seems like everyone is gone and you're just living alone without anyone that cares if you lived or died. But that's not the truth. You have so many people who love you….remember them and hold them close today.
8. Other people's success is not a measure of your worthiness.Â
I know that you're comparing yourself right now. You're comparing yourself to the people with big houses, fancy cars, internships, high grades, and big groups of friends. We are all destined to be on different paths in life. Your time is coming.
9. There are still blessings present in the darkest of days.Â
You have an education, a best friend, a place to sleep, and a breath flowing in and out of your body. You are blessed today and every day. Remember that...you are blessed.
10. Some people won't understand.Â
Not everyone will understand why you can't stop crying or why you've been wearing the same clothes for four days. It's not your job to make them understand. You don't have to validate your pain to everyone you see.
11. Please get up, walk around, eat something.Â
Isolation is your drug of choice and today, you are high as a kite. But to be around people is a reminder that you are loved...please take care of yourself.
12. You are powerful.Â
You are a stubborn human being with the power to do whatever you put your mind to. Don't give all of that up. You can do this.
13. You are someone's "person".Â
Someone, somewhere looks up to you for guidance, a listening ear, and an open heart. There is someone in this world who needs you.
14. It's okay to cry. It's okay to ask for help.Â
Let yourself feel. Don't try and hide everything just to save everyone else. But please remember to ask the right people for help. Not everyone can help you in the way you want them to be able to.
15. Your life matters. The world needs you. Whatever you do, please hold on.Â
Please stay alive. If even just for one more day, please keep living.
I know that if I can remind myself of these things, maybe I can regain the strength in those dark moments to keep pushing, just one more day.
Today could be your last. But tomorrow could be your best.
