The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow

Why Annie is one of my top favorite musicals

Annie has been one of my top favorite musicals for a long time. Now, like any theatre kid, I have a ton of musicals that I really love. Most of the music I listen to is show tunes, and I’m always on the hunt for new songs to listen to, and new musicals to discover. I think part of the reason Annie is one of my favorite musicals is because it was one of the first movie musicals I was ever exposed to, well besides Disney musicals (more about how much I love Disney musicals at a later date.) The first time I watched Annie, I was hooked. I loved the music, the acting, the dancing, and just everything about it. I used to try to dance to “Hard Knock Life” just like the orphans did, and even though I’m not the greatest dancer, I didn’t care at that age. I memorized all the lyrics to “Tomorrow”, and would sing it all throughout the house for fun. If I’m being completely honest, I still do that quite often!

Annie is one of my favorite characters because of how plucky and optimistic she is. Even though she was stuck in an orphanage during the great depression, and Ms. Hannigan was very mean to her and the other girls. She never gave up hope, and she tried her best to keep her friends’ spirits up. It’s a very admirable trait to never lose your sense of optimism even in tough situations. It’s something we could all use a little more sometimes.

I also really enjoy how lighthearted this musical is. Don’t get me wrong, I love musicals that try to tackle controversial issues in new and fresh ways, and leave such an impression on the audience weeks, months, even years after they first see it, but those aren’t really the intentions the creators had for this particular show. Annie was meant to make people smile, and to remind people that even if they might be having a rough day, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Years later, Annie still does that for people. Whether you’re watching it on Broadway, at a local high school, or even just watching the movie, the message is still the same. I think everyone needs to experience some light hearted entertainment like this. Fair warning though, you’ll probably have the songs stuck in your head for a long time, which isn’t a bad thing. Even though I’ve exposed myself to many more musicals since Annie, and still will continue searching for new musicals, Annie is always going to be one I’ll always love to come back to . I hope it inspires kids to pursue performing, just like it did for me when I was little, and to never give up on their dreams, whatever those dreams may be.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
