The Summer After High School

“I wish there was a way to know you were in the good ole days before you’ve actually left them” - Andy Bernard, 'The Office'

The summer after high school is probably one of the best ones. You’ve probably been looking forward to this summer forever. If you were involved in sports that have summer camps or conditioning you don't have to wake up when the sun comes up to drive yourself to wherever it may be. If you took AP classes you probably won't have summer homework to turn in on the first day anymore. People going to college in the fall will have orientation and finding out about where they will live and their roommates. There’s all these parties, graduation parties, bonfires, and who knows what else!

But, there are things you must do because if you're going away to college or enlisted in the service and are leaving in the fall you're gonna miss where you came from whether you realize it or not.

1. Spend time with your family

You’re going to miss them a lot when you leave, even if you complain about your little sibling being annoying, or your mom nagging you to clean your room (okay maybe not that but you know what I mean), or your dad, grandpas, grandmas, aunts, uncles, cousins and/or pets. You’ll miss the family get togethers when you can’t come home for the weekend because you have and exam that next week you really need to study for. So, go to that family party you really do not want to go to, spend time with them and laugh at whatever your crazy cousin is doing (you’ll miss that too).

2. Go to as many graduation parties as you can

If you were as lucky to have a close group of friends in high school as I was, you’re gonna be extremely sad just thinking about not having them right around the corner to hang out whenever you want. Make sure you go to graduation parties to spend time with all those people that made the last four, seven, or even 12 years of school bearable and let them know how much they mean to you.

3. Spend time with your friends

Like I said, if you were as lucky as I was to have a close group of friends, make sure you spend time with them and make memories doing whatever stupid thing you find to do that night/day. These will be the memories you tell your new group of friends in college about, about your best friends at home and the really funny thing that your one friend did. Go out to dinner with them, go to the beach, have bonfires, make memories!

The summer after high school should be full of letting go of high school and getting ready for the next step in life, but don't get rid of all those people who made it all worth it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
