The Struggles of a Science Major

All science majors can relate.

The Struggles of a Science Major

From one science major to another we all know that being a science major has certain difficulties. Difficulties that we come into contact with multiple times throughout each semester. Some science majors may even wonder if all of these struggles are worth their time and effort for what they want to do in life. That answer is almost always yes. No matter the hardships we go through in our majors we know we wouldn't want to do anything else.

1. The almost constant studying.

Whether you are reading your textbooks or making flashcards you are almost always doing some form of studying.

2. The realization that you might not be studying enough.

It seems like no matter how much you study you still don't end up with the grade you wanted or thought you deserved.

3. The class average on tests is generally 70% or lower.

This is when that realization comes into play and you end up being proud just to be average.

4. Forgetting your lab goggles.

This one happens so often and is so annoying when you have to book it back to your dorm or apartment so that you can get back to lab on time and not have to take a 0 for the week.

5. Hearing other majors complain about how hard their classes are.

Then proceeding to laugh and telling them you should try changing to my major and then think that those classes are hard.

6. Having at least one nervous breakdown a month.

For most this is inevitable because you are so worried about failing and having to go through the misery of taking that class a second time.

7. Finding out the final exam is cumulative.

Are these teachers trying to kill us.

8. Or when your second semester of a class is cumulative for both semesters...

You've got to be kidding me right?!

9. When you get to the exam and realize you learned none of this.

You spent all of that precious time studying just to find out none of what you learned is on the exam. And that there is so much on the exam you never even covered in class.

10. There's no such thing as "syllabus week".

All the other majors get to rejoice that they have no homework the first week when us science majors have 6 chapters to read and started taking notes the first day of class.

11. Buying textbooks costs an arm and a leg.

There's no doubting that science textbooks are much more expensive than almost any other textbook you would need in college. On the plus side, you use that one textbook for two semesters before you need to buy another one!

12. You've given up hope of getting an A on every exam.

No matter how hard you try, there will be at least one exam that you do not get an A on.

13. No matter how much you may complain about your major, you know you wouldn't trade it for any other major in a hundred years.

This is what you love to do and the struggles are always worth it in the end.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
