Majoring in mass communications isn't just about studying for tests and going to classes, it's a lifestyle. For media majors, class is a secondary part of education, as student media, internships and personal projects take over your life.
Here a few things that all media majors can relate to:
1. You can't enjoy a concert anymore.
You pay more attention how good the lighting is than the artist you have waited months to see. If you can't stand right in front of the stage, then you want to stand behind the media booth to check out all the gear and watch in amazement as they put on a good show.
2.You are constantly shopping for new gear.
Your days of shopping for clothes are long gone. Your Amazon shopping cart is full of cameras, lenses and various accessories. You can't go to any store without immediately going straight to the electronic section when you really need new stuff like you need another hole in your head.
3. You can't stand to watch people use their phones.
When people record videos to post on the Internet and use their iPhones facing vertically you kind of want to throw their phone across the room. They are not worthy.
4. Your friends think you speak another language.
You can try to explain your excitement over finally learning how to do something or how you finally have enough money to buy that new lens, but they just don't understand the hype and you have no one to nerd out with.
5. You are constantly arguing over which "brand" is better with your media friends.
Nikon or Canon? Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere? You're constantly arguing with your classmates about which camera takes better pictures or which editing program works better and in the end, you both have pretty awesome work.
6. You probably have a YouTube channel or have a close friend that does.
You have to get all the practice you can get with filming and using angles and spending hours editing. No matter how much it stresses you out, you constantly strive to improve.
7. Your creativity is constantly being tested.
Among your media peers and professors you're scared you're going to get eaten alive about a project you worked really hard on. It can be hard listening to people criticize your work, but you know they only have your best interest and want to help you improve in any way they can.
