The Struggles of College That I Have Come to Learn

The Struggles of College That I Have Come to Learn
Gabby Hart

We all know college isn't easy. And anyone who thinks it is needs to let me in on their secret ASAP. So for all you strugglers out there, hope you can maybe relate to a few of these:

  • 1)Waking up for an 8am is hard af
I have no idea how I did it in high school, waking up at 5:45 to get ready for school. That just sounds insane now. Honestly, it’s rough, and getting up at 6:15am on Mondays to go to lifting for soccer then go to an 8am after that is even worse. The struggle to stay awake for 8 and 9:30 classes is real people. I praise my high school self.
  • 2)Meal Plan? What meal plan?
Between the café for smoothies/coffee and pregame and post practice/game meals, our meal plans are struggling. Also, the food here is pretty expensive. And, it’s not necessarily that we’re eating too much, it’s that we get smoothies or coffees from the café during the day (plus our regular meals). And practice is so early that we eat an early dinner so by 8 or 9 o’clock we’re all starving again! Thank god for being able to add money onto our cards.
  • 3)Bed time….
Now that we are (weirdly) actual adults, we have to be our own parental guidance and tell ourselves when we need to go to bed. The problem is that you don’t do that. Time slips away from as you socialize with your friends around the dorm, music is playing, you’re on your computer/phone, oh and studying of course (@mom and @dad). Actually, there are more late nights up studying or doing homework than you would think, just saying. Next thing you know it’s 1 or 2 in the morning and you just have to tell yourself that you’ll take a nap to make up for it tomorrow.
  • 4)Naps are amazing, getting up from the sucks
You will suddenly have all this extra time on your hands when you get done with classes or have a gap in between. So you will nap, and it will be amazing. But waking up is almost harder than waking up in the morning for class. It’s almost torturous but you will inevitably do it again and again.
  • 5)Intense homesickness
If someone ever says that they haven’t been homesick while being away at college then they’re lying. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about/miss home, and my family, and my friends, and my pets. Sometimes it’s the little things that will get you. For instance, being from the pacific northwest I am used to the rain. It barely drizzled one day here in southern California and I got so excited and so homesick all at the same time. It’s hard but there’s really not much you can do about it.
  • 6)To do laundry or not to do laundry?
When you actually have to not only starting doing your own laundry but also paying for it, it doesn’t tend to happen as often. You will re-wear clothes that really didn’t get “dirty” in order to avoid your laundry basket filling up. But when you do have to do it, the process is annoying. If you are not there the moment that the buzzer goes off, someone else will have taken your clothes out for you and thrown them in a pile on top of the washer. Not cool.
  • 7)The showers…..
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect some kind of extravagant bathroom coming into college, especially not freshman year. But seriously? The showers are so small I can barely shave my legs in there. Not to mention the disgusting ball of hair in the drain that grows with every shower trip.
  • 8)Getting locked out of your room

It happens sometimes, not gonna lie. You just have a spaced out moment where you accidentally close your door behind when going to the bathroom, or just totally space out completely and don’t even bring your keys with you when you go out. It’s good to have the number of the people with the spare keys easily on hand.
  • 9)You’re around your college friends so much that when you’re separated you don’t know what to do with yourself
Especially being on the soccer team, I spend sooo much time with these girls. The longest period of time I ever have to go without seeing them is when I have class and none of them are in it. During freshman orientation we couldn’t stand being separated into different groups and were constantly texting each other. It’s really kind of sad. But we’re practically together 24/7 that it’s just so weird and wrong when you’re not with them. Not quite sure how we are all going to survive Thanksgiving break when we all have to go home.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
