The downfalls and blessings of being a short girl.

Height: it is always on your mind. Whether you're hitting your head on doorways or barely being able to see over countertops, no one is ever happy with their size. Standing at only 5'2, I am constantly conflicted with my love/hate relationship with my stature. Here are some negative and positive attributes to being short:

PROS:

Hide and seek master

Having a short frame is always a perk when it comes to hide and seek. Squeezing into tight corners and small unnoticeable hiding spots are easily mastered. Under the bed, in a small box, or cabinet-- don’t worry, you'll fit!

Extra legroom on airplanes

While many complain about the tight seats on airplanes, this is not a problem for us! When the sleepy traveler reclines his chair in front of you, your legs wont be uncomfortably wedged in between the seats! There will always be extra room that our taller friends could only dream of.

Clothing can be flexible

For shorter girls, clothing can be a blessing and a curse. Clothing can have double purposes! Is it a shirt? Or is it a dress? Why not both! The purpose of your clothes can not only be flexible to your wardrobe, but also to your pocket. Having the ability to wear kids clothes and shoes are always super cute and cheaper.

Being able to eat from the kids menu

While many associate height with age, it could certainly be a hassle. However, there are some benefits to it. Being able to eat on the kids menu is always great. Whether I'm not up for a full portion of food, or just want to reminisce on my childhood, chicken fingers are always my go-to meal.

Always being shorter than your date

This is the best part about being short! Whether your date is a tall basketball player or just your average joe, you can almost guarantee that you will be shorter than him. Yes, this means that your able to strut your highest heels without looking like a skyscraper.

CONS:

Struggling to find the perfect pair

Hopefully I am not the only one that struggles with this. Although many of us with a short stature have normal sized torsos, legs are a problem. Our legs are abnormally short, while the rest of our body is on the same page as others. Purchasing pants that fit in every area is singlehandedly the most difficult task out there. The waist may fit well, but the length might be oh so long. The rarity of finding the perfect pair without any alternations necessary is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Public restroom struggles

This is every short girl’s nightmare. Dealing with using a public restroom is a process in itself. You finally get the courage to waltz into the bathroom and carefully select the cleanest looking stall. Focusing on the task at hand, you realize the toilet is a bit too high for your small frame to squat over. Should I do the unspeakable and sit? Or should I attempt an awkward half squat? The world may never know.

Unable to see in crowds

If you are at a concert, party, or just hanging with friends it is very easy to get lost in the mix. You might miss out on the action due to a few heads blocking the view. You better find a guy who will let you sit on his shoulders!

People think you’re younger

While your squad might make an appearance, you’re always looked at as the younger sibling. As your group of friends show up to an outing, one might believe that you’re the younger sister, forced to tag along. Just because you’re short doesn’t make your younger! Remember, Kourtney is older than Kendall.

Cannot reach the top shelf

This may be one of the most irritating tasks a short girl must face. We go about with our daily lives until an item must be retrieved from the top shelf. Jumping, throwing other items and certainly not standing are all ineffective. After numerous attempts, you realize that climbing the shelves is a MUST. With many close calls, falls and injuries, we’ve all be there. On the bright side, rock climbing is one of our many talents!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
