The Struggle Of Being A Girl Who Loves Sports
Clemson

I am the only child of an avid sports lover. Well, as luck would have it, I'm a girl. This, however, did not phase my football-loving father. On Saturdays, I became his "son," and no one (and by no one, I mean my mom) was to even think about touching the remote to change the channel from a football game. It doesn't matter who is playing, NCAA football is all we watch on Saturdays. Growing up watching these games religiously on the weekends left me with no choice but to learn what was going on. Dad had to teach me the ins and outs of the game so that he had someone to talk it out with. "Now sit down and watch this replay. See if you can tell me what went wrong." "They threw the flag because the defense was off sides." "Did you see that pick 6??" You see, I have no choice but to be at least a bit knowledgeable, and I love it.

I live for Saturdays in the fall, and when people ask my favorite season, I respond with "football." I think it gives me an advantage being a girl who knows a little about the sport. I love the look on a guy's face when I reveal some of my knowledge about what's going on. People just assume that because I am a female there's no way I could know anything about a boy's sport, and I love proving them wrong. Some boys are intimidated by this. Nine times out of ten, though, you'll get MAJOR brownie points for being able to keep up with the guys. I may wear make up sometimes, but don't let this sweet smile fool you. I can hang with the best of them. I don't know the specifics of every position or which route to run if we're up against a 4-3 defense. But don't you dare count me out. I'm not oblivious, and I'm not afraid to prove you wrong.

Girls, do me a favor and learn a little about the game and the team if you're going to cheer for someone or something. Please don't make us all look like we think home runs are scored in football and that a spiral is something you do to ribbons on presents. And boys, don't assume we're all clueless. If we don't know something, teach us! I'm always up for learning more about the game or my favorite team (Go Tigers!!!)

I'm proud to be a girl who knows a little about man's game of football. My strong personality isn't afraid to let you know that, either. Speak up if you know what's going on! Surprise people! And ladies, get ready...kickoff is in 81 days!!!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
