Believe it or not, there are people out there that are not huge fans of breakfast foods. I am one of those people.
I wouldn’t say I hate breakfast foods, they’re just not my favorite. Albeit, I still eat breakfast foods because really, what else am I going to eat in the morning? Spaghetti and meatballs? I could, but it just wouldn't seem right.
There is a loophole for those who wake up closer to noon. It seems more acceptable to eat non-breakfast foods at that time. Go ahead and eat that leftover pizza, it’s almost lunchtime anyway. But for those of us who are morning people and wake up before ten, it just seems wrong.
The thought of eating eggs or pancakes or even cereal is enough to ruin my appetite for the day. So, it takes awhile for me to decide what to eat. After opening up every single cabinet three times and my refrigerator seven times, I assess my options. Except for me, they aren’t options. They are last resorts.
Most of the time, I don’t have the time (or energy) to make pancakes or eggs. So, I settle on cereal. I loathe cereal. At first, it’s not that bad. After just pouring the milk over the cereal, it’s starts to become that perfect balance of flavorful crunch and hints of cold milk. It’s pretty good. About halfway through, it becomes bad. The milk starts to taste like whatever cereal I’m eating. The cereal becomes so soft that it begins to deteriorate and a terrible aftertaste forms in my mouth. Eating wet cereal is barbaric and gross.
On days that I do have the time (and energy) to put a little more effort into my breakfast, I’ll venture into the world of real breakfast foods. There are two categories, really—foods with syrup and foods with eggs. If I decide on syrup, I’ll go for pancakes. Who really has a waffle maker, anyway? Frozen waffles don’t leggo my eggo. When I’m in the mood for eggs, I like them sunny side up. This way, I can make two slices of toast, dip it in the yolk and then throw away the rest of it. It’s as close as I will get to a win.
Going out to breakfast is different (at any time of they day). Diners are sanctuaries. Breakfast food is much more appealing there. Except for cereal. Cereal is always terrible. There are so many wonderful options. You can never go wrong with a delicious bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel or a perfect Belgian waffle. Even the boring foods, like pancakes or two eggs sunny side up, taste better. It makes breakfast a little more desirable.
I’ve grown used to the looks I get when I say I’m not a fan of breakfast foods. I’ve grown used to the to the exasperated reactions I get when I say I hate cereal. People are really offended by that one. So for now, I’ll eat cereal when I absolutely have to, but I won’t like it. I’ll continue to search for more loopholes, like bagels with cream cheese. Bread and any form of cheese are acceptable always. As a morning person, breakfast is something I just can’t avoid.
It’s the most important meal of the day, after all.
