The Stress Of Registering For Classes

At the end of every semester, Butler University has its student register for classes for the following semester. This process has proven to be very stressful for most students. Students often struggle to get the classes they need for their major, because Butler bases the registration times off of how many credit hours that a person has and what year they are in school. I guess as the student goes through college they have better chances of getting the classes they need because they will have more credit hours and they will be in a different grade level. Sometimes registering can be like the a student is in "The Hunger Games."

Being a first year student and entering my second year, I struggled to get some of the classes I need for my majors or a class Butler requires me to take. I changed my schedule multiple times in a span of five minutes because a class I needed to take was closed. To some people, registering for classes can be more stressful than finals. Shocking, right? I have noticed that one the required classes that Butler has students take had very few seats open. With that being said, if a student did not have an early registration time, then they probably did not get that class.

I know for a fact my roommate finds the process of registering for classes more stressful than finals week, especially this semester. She is a biochemistry major, so she needs to take organic chemistry for her major. All of the organic chemistry classes were full for next semester. She has to petition to get into that class. Petitioning to get into a class is extremely difficult and extremely hard to get approved. When petitioning to get into a class, a student has to jump through a whole bunch of hoops to get the desired class. This just adds onto the stress of registering for classes. Registering for classes was not easy this semester for most people. I know of a lot of people that have schedules they do not like because of how registration went.

I think this semester was harder to register for because the university wants to keep seats open for incoming new students. With the university doing this, it now becomes more difficult for current students to get the required classes for Butler done. Students at Butler now have to wait until the last incoming student has registered to see if there are any open seats in certain classes to try and get into those classes. Basically, a student might not have a complete schedule until June. That is when the last new student registration date is. In reality registering for classes should not be as stressful as it is, but this is a part of growing up and learning.

So good luck and let the games begin.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
