The #MyCauseMyCleats initiative came into action just a few weeks ago when NFL players from across the league were allowed to wear special cleats dedicated to an organization or initiative of their choice. Most of the cleats were worn during week 13 of the NFL season, and since the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans had bye weeks around that time, they would wear their special cleats for the following week. Here are the cleats of five NFL players and the stories that are behind those cleats:
1. Drew Brees: Brees Dream Foundation
Brees started his foundation back in 2003 when he was a San Diego Charger. His efforts toward rebuilding New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, providing families with affordable healthcare and improving the quality of life for cancer patients have led him to win a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Since its creation, the Brees Dream Foundation has contributed over $25,000,000 toward global charities.
2. Dak Prescott: American Cancer Society
In 2013, Prescott's mom, Peggy, lost her battle with colon cancer. As the daughter of a school principal and teacher, Peggy worked multiple jobs to support her three sons, and her strong work ethics and resiliency definitely rubbed off on her youngest son, Dak. In fact, the relationship between Prescott and his mom was so close that he even chose to wear No. 4 for the Cowboys in her honor. Peggy's birthday is on September 4.
3. Lesean McCoy: ALS Association
Remember all of the Ice Bucket Challenge videos that flooded your Facebook feeds a couple of summers ago? The ALS Association was responsible for all of that. Ever since McCoy's grandmother suffered from ALS, he has been on a relentless pursuit toward helping families fight the disease. The pursuit to tackle ALS started in Philadelphia back when he was an Eagle, and it continues in Buffalo now that he's with the Bills.
4. Russell Wilson: Why Not You Foundation
Since he joined the Seahawks four years ago, Wilson visits patients at the Seattle Children's Hospital on Tuesdays. Celebrities like Joel McHale, various Seahawks teammates and even his wife, Ciara, go with him on multiple occasions. That mindset of helping out in his community came from his late father, who challenged him to approach life with a "why not you" attitude. Wilson's Why Not You Foundation focuses on motivating, empowering and preparing youth to become leaders of the future.5. Eric Berry: Hodgkins Lymphoma
Berry's NFL comeback is truly remarkable. After beating lymphoma, he made his first Pro Bowl, was nominated for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year and came through in the clutch when his team needed him the most. During a game against the Atlanta Falcons, Berry picked off Matt Ryan's two-point conversion pass late in the game and ran it all the way back to give the Chiefs their third-straight victory.
"Purple is the color of my cancer," Berry said about his cleats. "That color just resonates with me; it sticks with me now. I’ve got the ribbon on the tongue of those cleats, so when I get tired or think I’m tired, I look down and see that ribbon and that purple and I’m like, 'You’re not really tired, bro.'"
