In our current world of so many wonderful cartoons and animation, I have to say that "Steven Universe" has a special place in my heart. Though no show can claim to be flawless, "Steven Universe" has a special quality that really makes me gravitate towards it and its characters. From the creative premise, to the lovable characters, to the interesting world building, and larger than life plots, for me, it was oh so easy to get sucked into the world of "Steven Universe." In fact, this is one of the shows that really helped guide me towards me current passion and career path. Without this show, I definitely wouldn't be sitting where I am today with the dreams I currently have.
So as the latest season came to a close and the movie announcement was released, for once I was feeling excitement instead of dread. Often, people feel anxious when their favorite franchise is adapted into a new form. While, I admit, I was anxious to see how the story continued from the latest season given that we ended on such a nice note, I wasn't at all scared about the quality of the product. The crew of the show has proven itself to be full of capable storytellers. With this in mind, I am very pleased to say that the latest "Steven Universe" movie was absolutely spectacular. There are many positives when it comes to this movie, so I will make sure to hit the highest notes.
First, if you are a fan of animation, I highly recommend watching this movie. The animation is quite lovely with bright colors and has a wonderful, fast-paced feel to it. The characters and camera angles are creative and work wonders with the design to create tones that perfectly match the scene. Even if you are not a fan of the "Steven Universe" art style, I would still recommend the animation due to the fun style of the antagonist. The antagonist is animated in a very similar style to old cartoons and seeing that old-timey character design and movement work onscreen was extremely satisfying. For a variety of reasons and a variety of animation styles, I highly recommend watching this fun animated film.
The story of this movie is absolutely touching and was wonderful to watch develop. Personally, I enjoyed the pacing of the movie. After a quick introduction, I was pretty stoked to get into the heart of the action very quickly. From there, the pacing feels very organic and is very pleasing to watch unfold. The story itself felt like it could be placed in the world that "Steven Universe" creates in its show. For me, this is really important because movies can forget their origins at times and leave us feeling unsatisfied with the final product. Overall, I think the story was absolutely wonderful and the ending was really satisfying as someone who is a big fan of the show.
I can't go through this talk about this movie without mentioning the wonder that is the soundtrack. This movie works as a movie musical and let me tell you, some serious effort was put into all of its songs. The cartoon series was no stranger to having its characters burst into musical numbers, but the film takes it to another level by not only bringing a killer soundtrack, but brining heartfelt and touching moments as well. All of these songs are so beautiful and fun to listen to and I personally have been playing them on loop since I have seen the movie. Plus, the villain song, like so many other villain songs in the past, is so much fun to listen to and definitely matches the tone of the character and her overall design. The talent and love that went behind these songs are evident and make the soundtrack all the more pleasing to listen to.
I love this movie so much and as a fan of the show for many years, I can say that it tugged on all of my heart strings. If you are a fan of the original series, I can guarantee that you will find something to love in this new movie.
