It's that time in the semester when universities are shutting down for a week to give the students a spring break. A week of freedom, no 8 a.m. classes and probably some poor decision-making by all of the twenty-somethings around the country. It's a time for friends and family and staying up late and sleeping in until the afternoon. But in reality, it's really just a tease for the luxury of summer vacation. Coming back to class after spring break feels like the semester just helped you up onto your feet, patted you on the back, then knocked you right back down on the ground.
Professors are asking questions about the material they went over before break started. That feels like centuries ago.
What class am I in again?
Hopefully, there wasn't anything due this week because I didn't even take a pencil with me on vacation.
You get back and look at your planner for the rest of the semester and those due dates are punching you in the face. Back in December, we had plenty of time to finish that paper or project that wasn't due until April. We didn't think anything else about it. Until now, when we're about two weeks away from flipping the calendar once again. It's fun to think that classes end in a little over a month, but it won't matter if we don't pass them.
So how do we get passed these Spring Break Blues?
Well, we don't, really. We suck it up and remind ourselves that we didn't come this far to fail now. Find motivation in the fact that you don't ever want to take that course again. Know that in a few years, you'll graduate and be an adult and you won't get breaks like that anymore. Kick and scream when the alarm goes off, make a pot of coffee, and deal with it. Nobody knows that you slept in those pants. Nobody can tell this is day number four of dry shampoo.
Wake up every morning knowing you're one day closer to summer vacation. One day closer to graduation. But don't lose sight of what the day holds. Time flies when you're having fun so make each day worth living. Find the fun in the mundane and keep kicking butt.
We're almost there, friends.
