If we all rest our souls one day, then why would any of us want to put any extra effort into being a historical and legendary figure rather than settle for a satisfying and successful life? Why do some people have a burning desire to be remembered for generations after generations? To first answer this question, the fact that having this life is extremely difficult needs to be considered. Lots of people aim for a life that will print their names in history, yet the cruelty of life seems to laugh at their audacity and courage, and only grant some of these wishes.
Assuming reaching this point in life isn’t as difficult as it is in reality, questioning people’s motives might become more manageable. One would argue that being successful in work and satisfied with one’s life is a good enough life. So long as one’s family is healthy and living an economically stable life, then that would be considered satisfactory. One can also be of great wealth, yet still succumb to the idle notion of not cementing one’s place in the world’s illustrious history.
On the other hand, successful athletes for example live under very decent living conditions, yet still endeavor in their attempts to inspire new generations. Although they could well be living their lives on their own with their families, these select few choose to change the world through their actions. The same could be said of all people working in different workplaces; the desire to create a change is always intriguing.
The idea of leaving the world is worrying enough, so just thinking about your name disappearing from all records of history two generations after your passing makes it all the more horrifying. Never settle for a life that only pleases oneself, unless you are willing to accept the consequences of your eternal disappearance some years later. Our minds and bodies may rust, but our souls must always live on.
