The Soul of Summer

Find your people and summer will never end.

Find those people that make you remember why you do it. Find those people that make you relish those very few days off from work. The people that continuously inspire you to keep working hard, while simultaneously making sure you take the time to stop and enjoy the things around you.

Find the people who want to spend a summer day floating on a raft with you discussing absolutely everything from past relationships to future goals, to absolutely nothing like whether a hot dog is a sandwich or if Kourtney Kardashian is the realist “Bounce Back” there could be after taking an L.

Hangout with the friends that will get in your car last minute and randomly go on a road trip with you or try out that new bar that just opened down the street. Find the people that will randomly get a bunch of scary movies and stay up late watching them with you just to see if they will actually freak you out.

These are the people that hold the soul of summer.

These are the friends that will look back at these moments years from now and remember not the feeling of summer itself, but the feeling of happiness that was created from being with you in the heat of the summer. In this time of our lives, when we spend so much time working to raise money for college and bills, or just to get our foot in the right direction of our careers, we get so goal orientated we tend to skip the here and now. We miss all the important things that are happening around us. True, every moment is precious at this age to make the right connections and the right moves to have a better future.

So why spend the time we do have free being without the people that make life worth living or without taking the time to relish the true purpose of summer break? Raise a glass with a friend, get lost on some long road to the middle of nowhere fast, rent a ridiculous amount of scary movies, float on a raft, stare up at the sky and discuss every big and silly question your mind has in these summer months.

Just never forget that, in the end, it's human connections that truly make us happy. No matter how hard we work, or how successful our careers are, we can never truly be happy without people close to us to enjoy it with. If you are lucky enough to find those people, every day will be a summer adventure.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
