The Sorority That Built Me

Finding a place to call home.

The Sorority That Built Me
Grade Slam

When I walked onto my university campus for the first time, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know where my classes were, even after the extensive orientation I went through and checking out my buildings before classes started. I drew a blank because I was afraid. I was in a city I didn't know, without any of my closest friends, and three roommates that I barely knew. I didn't think I would ever fit in anywhere, I didn't know what organizations to commit to, and I didn't think I could get through the first week, let alone four years.

And then I went Greek.

I could sit here and tell you how much Greek life changed my life (because it did), but I am going to do something even better. I am going to tell you how my sorority built me.

Flashback to freshman year. I went Greek my very first semester. This is where it all began. Going Greek was not something I had intended to do. However, I stepped out of my comfort zone and fell in love with Greek Life. I have always been an outgoing, bubbly, and fun girl, but have always feared stepping out of my comfort zone. All it took was one person to change my entire outlook on Greek life.

In the two years that I have been Greek, I have excelled on so many levels. My sisters have inspired me to put myself out there and take advantage of every opportunity. It's because of them that I can stay humble when I am on top of the world and be optimistic when things aren't going my way.

I have excelled academically.

The thought that Greek women aren't intelligent is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about Greek life. My sisters praise me when I succeed and offer their help, support and assistance when I am struggling. They are some of the most intelligent women that I know. My sorority believes in the importance of scholarship.

I have excelled socially.

Now, I don't mean that I spend my weekends on Fraternity Row or at the local bars. Because of my sorority, I have learned how to be a sociable person. I have learned to branch out, make connections with others, and be involved in other organizations. I have learned how to be appropriate and professional at all times and remember that I am always wearing my letters. My sorority believes in the importance of remembering who you are and who you represent.

I have excelled in compassion.

Since becoming Greek, my compassion for others has increased immensely. I have fallen in love with life and with all of its opportunities. I have grown to show more compassion for others who are in situations worse than mine. I love community involvement and community service and have learned the importance of staying humble. My sorority believes in characteristics such as loyalty, humility, courage, compassion and kindness.

My sorority has built me and shaped me into the woman that I am today. I don't know what kind of a person or student I would be if I didn't have my sisters to guide me, inspire me, support me and love me.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
