As a sophomore in college, I can tell you that the notorious "sophomore slump" is not real. In fact, I feel like sophomores are more motivated and hard working than most other classes. We have made it through the trials of freshman year and are eager to increase our GPA and gain experience. We have gotten jobs and have learned to juggle the balance between, work, play, and school.
In my opinion, the sophomore slump is a phrase that a few lazy students made up to justify their inability to get out of bed and go to class.
Sophomore year is about making connections and building your network all while studying hard and doing your best. We have discovered the library and the best ways to study. Time management has become something we have mastered. We get an early start on papers and projects because we can still feel the fatigue after the terrible all-nighters of freshman year. I am not saying that sophomore year is all butterflies and cupcakes, but I am saying that sophomores are hard workers that are up for the challenge. I think that more than ever, we are energized by our classes. We have already made a dent in our general introduction classes and are now able to take classes that we really enjoy.
There are articles out there on how to get through the sophomore slump, but there aren't many that will tell you how to avoid it totally and even fewer that talk about the fallacy that is the sophomore slump.
Just looking at how hard my friends work and their sheer motivation to do well this year disproves the whole idea. We are not "jinxed" nor are our grades plummeting. We are more confident in our abilities and are excited about where our lives are going to take us. When there are tough times, we are able to vent to each other because we know what the other is going through. We understand the importance of taking study breaks and know how we deal with stress best. Sophomore year is what you make it so let's make it right.
