The 6 Stages Of Sunburn

When our sunscreen fails to protect us.

The 6 Stages Of Sunburn

The summer season is upon us, and this means that it's time to hit the beach and soak up some much needed sun! Whether it's down the shore or by the pool, everyone is dying to strip out of their winter coats and exchange them for their bathing suits to enjoy the season of fireflies and warm sunshine. However, sometimes we tend to soak up too much sun, and instead of our skin turning a desired bronze, we get a dark and painful red, which is commonly known as sunburn.

From the endless pain to the final results of our skin, sunburn can leave us complaining about the regret of not using or reapplying our sunscreen. Here are the six stages of getting through a sunburn, because we all know how painful it can be.

1. Getting home and realizing that you're burned

Once you step into your bathroom, it's all over. The light in there always seems to be the one indicator that you've gotten burned, since you don't actually feel the pain until you see the red starting to blossom on your skin. The bathroom says it all, and you know you're in for a painful recovery.

2. The sleepless nights

Forget sleep. Your skin will feel like someone's set fire to it, and it'll feel that way even at night. You'll struggle finding a comfortable position to sleep in, since everything hurts. You'll end up not getting enough sleep, which will come back to bite you the next day. And we all know that sleeping on your back is impossible.

3. Aloe Vera

This stuff is all you'll be rubbing on your skin. While it dries very sticky, you have to push through. Sometime's you'll end up going through more than half of the bottle. Same goes for lotion, and even in some cases, you've looked up home remedies on the internet.

4. Fear of the outdoors

After the sun did some serious damage to your skin, you have the fear of stepping outside too soon, thinking that the sun will betray you once again. However, sunscreen is your friend, and should be applied if you plan to leave your home while still burned!

5. The subsiding of the pain

After for what seemed like an eternity of pain, you can finally sleep through the nights without worrying about your skin eating you alive, and you've finally been able to comfortably sit down and walk wherever your please!

6. Realizing that you've become incredibly tan

The red that once marked your skin has healed to reveal the summer tan you've always wanted. Maybe the pain was almost worth it...almost.

Use sunscreen kids! No matter how much you want that summer glow, sunscreen will be your best friend for the entire summer!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
