When I tell someone I’m in a long distance relationship they tell me “good luck.” Although their doubt is frustrating, it is understandable. Long term relationships are especially scary and hard; it’s hard enough managing a relationship without distance. Don’t be too scared, though; I just finished my first semester at a college 300 miles away from my boyfriend, and we are still going strong. Since long distance can be scary and often a deterring factor, I would like to share a few tips I’ve learned this past semester.
1. Communication
That’s right, say it with me now: com-mu-ni-ca-tion. This is an essential part of any relationship, but distance makes communication even more crucial. Though it can be tough sometimes, communicating how you really feel to your significant other is the only way to truly be understood. With that being said, don’t forget communication goes both ways, so be prepared to sit back and listen to what they really think and feel too. Once you both hear and understand both sides to the story, then you can work on the next C.
