The American Flag typically blows freely though the wind at the highest point of its pole, a gesture of freedom Americans hold dear to their heart. The significance of this gesture dates back to the era of America’s Founding Fathers, who created this seal that would embody their beliefs and passion for this great nation. The colors used for this seal are as follows: White, symbolic for purity and innocence. Red, which signifies hardiness and valor. Blue, representing vigilance, perseverance and justice.
The American Flag is flown daily as a testament to these monumental qualities listed above. However, in light of the excessive casualties within the last two weeks, flags have flown half-mast.
Synonymous with the term “half-staff,” the flag is flown at half-mast as a memory of previous events in which we honor, such as the sacrifices our veterans have made for our great nation on Veteran’s Day. Another role of a half-mast flag is to recognize and mourn recent tragic events that have occurred.
Within the past two weeks, America has seen its symbol of freedom flown half-mast. Beginning July 8th, our president ordered the flag to be lowered in memory of the fallen police officers of Dallas, Texas. This lasted until July 12th, where was quickly drawn down once more on July 15th to mourn those lives lost in Nice, France. However, this would only be met by the tragedy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on July 18th, increasing the duration until the 22nd of the month.
When the flag is flown at half-mast on days that are not listed as a memorial, people begin to feel threatened. These citizens begin to question why the symbol of freedom and peace is being restrained. I truly believe that there is a justification for this anxiety, because not only is America entering a tumultuous state, but the world has been experiencing a time of great suffering.
Within the past year, there have been many attacks both on American soil and of the soil of our allies. These attacks have taken a multitude of lives and have instilled fear within the hearts of those who carry their personal civic liberties. Instead of unifying as one against this great evil, I have noticed that after each attack, the collective consciousness of our nation has dissolved further and further. This divide, during a time where we need to unify and fight for one cause, is an alarming reality.
This divide has been caused by a collection of various influences, such as the positions of presidential candidates in the upcoming election and lack of proper techniques for unification from our current president.
However, division is not the purpose of this article.
Chances are that if you are reading this article, you are concerned about the future of not only our nation, but the collective future of all nations. I ask each and every one of you reading this article to carry on with your life, wary of what may occur, but not hindered by it. Remember why countless men and women have fought for the rights you may take for granted on a daily basis. You are free to seek out opportunities that interest you, opportunities you find passion and enjoyment in.
Also, I ask you to act above the common notion of divide and prejudice. Be stronger than those who divide and become a unifier. As more and more people disregard the notion of division and lead lives of unity, we will be able to overcome these perilous times where the light at the end of the tunnel seems unreachable.
I am not writing to you on a political level. I am writing to you from the heart. I firmly believe unity will bring out the greatness that has been overshadowed by the hatred and injustice that has begun to take over. Tragic events, such as the shootings throughout the nation, will come to an end if we work toward a common understanding.
Do not be fearful of the future, anticipate it. Encourage a future where we all come together as one. This can be accomplished, and it can begin with you.
